Hi.. and welcome fellow CT person! You'll love it here. My best flowers for attracting butterflies are Zinnias, most kinds work for me, even the doubles like Benary Giants, Oklahoma, cut and come again, and California giants. Last year I found that I even had success with the shorter Profusion varietites. They attracted mostly skippers and American Ladies but as the season turned to Fall, other species checked them out. I'd never noticed the shorter types attracting much until lat year. Of course a butterfly bush would be good, they don't cost much if you get a small one gallon pot at a local nursery. Verbena Bonariensis works great here and most years reseeds. Tropical Milkweed which you can grow from seed yourself is great for Monarchs. Mexican Sunflowers (tithonia) attract Tiger Swallowtails. I always grow parsley and bronze fennel for the Black Swallowtails. I hope your garden is in a sunny spot, because the butterflies love the warmth of the sun. Good Luck and keep posting. Our season up here starts late and peaks in July and August. But september and october can be rewarding months for the migrant species. jjdbike, as Msssherry said, Thihonia (Mexican Sunflower) is great, especially for Monarchs, I think! It doesn't get as big up yonder in Zone 6 as it will in Msssherry's zone 8, and will not grow rapidle or flower till late June or July. Mine (started from seed in early March) is still only about a foot tall. With temps now reaching the 80's they have begun to grow quickly, and have put on as much growth in the last week than the 2 months since germination! There is also a lower growing cultivar called "Torch" that is only supposed to reach 36". This year I put in a row of the regular Tithonia (that gets around 4 feet) in along the fence, and a row of the torch in front of that, for a 2 tiered effect. Be sure to plant some milkweed close by as a host, because Monarchs seem to love Tithonia, and it provides a good source of host plant and nectar for the Monarchs on teir fall migration back to Mexico!
