Why are my watermelon leaves turning yellow and fruit falling off
Comments (4)Not too much rain. This plant has had yellowing of the leaves since it was a seedling. I have gotten a few messages from people that the Golden Midget just has yellowish leaves. I can propose that maybe the fruit turning yellow/falling off is because of lack of pollination? I have a blacktail mountain watermelon growing right next to it that has no problems....See Morea cross pollinator for my Rainer cherry tree
Comments (7)Moril: Neither Rainier nor Bing will work well in your area. Any cherry tree you would receive in a "trade" would likely be suspect. It could be a Rainier seedling, which you definitely would not want. If you want to try to grow a sweet cherry tree in Kansas, and none of them would be easy, you need to investigate the softer new varieties like Lapins and Black Gold. There are now quite a number of newer varieties that might work, but you need to study up on the situation before you buy, and when you do, buy from a reputable nursery that will supply you with a grafted tree of known quality. The larger, crisp, west coast varieties are not good choices where you live, or where I live either. Don Yellman, Great Falls, VA...See Morewill my zucchini and yellow crookneck cross pollinate?
Comments (5)I second the motion. "Seed To Seed" is the bible of seed saving, and will teach you not only how to maintain purity but how to gather seed as well. Sometimes there are surprises. With your summer squashes, for instance, to save seed you have to grow them as if they were winter squashes. And, yes, the two will definately have cross-pollination problems if not isolated or hand pollinated. They are both the same genus & species. How big are these "rows" btw? Most families more than make do with just one or two plants of zucchini and yellow squash. They are incredibly prolific....See MoreWill my watermelon cross polinate w/ my squash?
Comments (2)Watermelon and squash look similar when they first sprout. I doubt that a zucchini seed "popped up as a watermelon." Does it have a watermelon fruit on it already? It's been a while since I grew watermelon, but if I recall, their stems don't have prickly spines on them, while zucchini do. (Am I right about that?) You may be able to tell the plants apart that way. Anyway, your watermelon will not cross pollinate with a squash. They are two completely different plants. A yellow squash or gourd or pumpkin will/may cross with another squash, because they are all squash. But a watermelon won't....See Moreanney
