Garden Guru bombs out

So in the current Fine Gardening, the little Garden Guru column takes a question from a lady asking for support for removing a large spruce tree from her front yard because it would open things up and allow her to do things that she wants to do (not specified) there. She was a bit intimidated that her Garden Club friends would not approve.

Well, the GG gives her an okay to take it out, but concludes by admonishing her that she MUST "replace it with another spruce or similar tree in another spot in her yard." For habitat and whatever.

Sheesh! I could see the discussion about look before you leap, and then maybe on to having some fun considering ways to continue to provide some kind of habitat, this is an opportunity to determine what types of creatures you might or might not want to attract, isn't it fun to try new things-- but, "must plant another tree"? What if she wants to provide berries, or flowers for hummingbirds and butterflies, or just have armloads of cut flowers or something for her own pleasure?

Why does the Garden Nazi try to use the same kind of intimidation this lady had feared from the Garden Club, just veiled, about what we can do or not do in our yards, as though "they" have the inside track on ecology, and that perpetuates landscape paralysis ?
