volunteer tomato in may?

I did a search for this info and couldn't find anything specific.

I was told that May was too late to plant tomatoes in zone 8 (Austin, TX). However, I found a volunteer tomato next to my compost pile that is about 11 inches tall.

My question is should I go ahead and treat this volunteer as though it will fruit. I am assuming because of its size that it must have germinated in late April.

Any info is appreciated.

Thanks!
