Small front yard, drought, low maintenance
Comments (26)In terms of your question about curved paths - I can see why you might decide on a straight path given the size of your yard, but if you have a straight path, I think it would be better to have curvature in your plantings - right now everything is in straight lines. Most (but not necessarily all) landscaping pictures that I see have some curves. Or in the case where the design uses only straight lines, they will have for example, one rectangle, and then another that is jutted out from the first, and so on in such a way that the various rectangles actually visually look a bit curved. This is a picture that might show a bit of what I mean. https://www.houzz.com/photos/paver-walkway-traditional-landscape-columbus-phvw-vp~237790 In terms of your question about what type of walkway to use - my preference would be a solid surface as per your second picture. I think that the first picture looks a bit more like a casual path that would be in the back yard, and not in the front yard....See MoreIdeas for attractive, low maintenance yard?
Comments (4)Perhaps I should add that this park is in a rural area, surrounded by farms. We have deer and, once in a while, Wildcats and coyotes, along with the usual other small to medium sized animals. That's the main reason I want a well secured, small fenced area for my dog. There is currently no deck or porch to speak of, just steps going up to a landing that is maybe 8x8, to get into the front door. Someday, my dream would be to have a large, screened in porch, but that is way down the road. My other question would be: let's say I divide the yard into plots or squares, let's say 10x10. If I can only afford to do one plot at a time, what would be the best way to keep the weeds at bay in the other plots until I can get to them?...See MoreFront yard ideas - minimalistic and low maintenance.
Comments (3)Also be so so careful of anything non native that promises to fill the in the area super fast with no work at all like Vica vine, ivy, snow on the mountain, etc. They are invasive and will be way more work in the long run, please please don't do it. In my experience so far, anytime you add a whole new series of plants or shrubs, it is a process and a lot of work. That is also why a photo or an idea of what is already planted there would help. Perhaps there is a base already to work with that could just be tweaked a bit. That being said I have seen some long term fill in success with day lilies or ferns. Sometimes hostas. They do take work to get established to that level though. Of course, I also have no idea if its appropriate for the climate, light and space you have going....See Moresteep sloped yard design. idea for low maintenance yard?
Comments (11)Somebody with a big enough lawn could easily pay $200 per month during the mowing season just to have that kept mowed and edged, with blowing of associated debris off of adjacent paved surfaces afterward and subsequent hauling and disposal of clippings off site. For instance when I was paying a lawn service to do this on my previous 0.6 acre property that was somewhat less than about half lawn at that point the charge per visit got up to $65 before I went back to mowing it myself several years ago. The mowing service provider was on site maybe as much as 15 minutes each time. With of course disposal of my share of the accumulated load adding a little more time off site. Otherwise a couple longtime friends providing expert gardening (in the one case) and landscape (in the second) services primarily to the Seattle area market I think are currently figuring their time charges at about $45 per hour. The first party does not even drive, typically shows up on a bicycle and does maintenance gardening with hand tools (except when a project really does require a truck, in which case a second party is brought in to help with the work). Their continually growing roster of repeat customers keeps them very busy during the spring in particular....See Moretimbo59
