Cucumber Wilt

We will be planting our pickles soon, by seed, directly into the ground. The past two years the plants started out great, developed some fruit and then suddenly started to wilt and die. I believe that I read on this forum that this is a disease spread by a beetle. Is there anything I should be doing in advance of planting to ensure it doesn't happen again? I'm trying to avoid pesticides as much as possible.
