Waging war with rabbits!!

Today was the fourth time I have filled in a hole (in the exact same spot) in my garden that was dug by these guys. I was willing to let them keep digging in the same spot since they weren't really hurting anything, but last night, they decided to eat ALL of my young beets -- so now it's WAR! There is a nest of them under my neighbor's shed, which happens to be about 30 feet from my garden. I don't want to spend the money to put up a fence if I can get away without putting one up... and I live in town, so I can't break out the old .22. Any suggestions from anybody more experienced with varmint warfare than I?

Pellet gun worked for hubby. Nice and quiet and deadly. Other than that it's a fence.

Fencing. Only real option. Doesn't even have to be very tall.

Sounds like you might have aphids (the sticky stuff), thrips (the fly-away ones) and/or fungus gnats (the moisture loving swarmers). The first thing you need to do is create better air circulation in there. Have you tried some kind of house plant insecticide like Safer's Insecticidal Soap spray which is 'safe' for most plants and won't affect pets, etc. (though don't use it near an aquarium or birds just to be sure).

Hi Terry, The birds eat all the fruit on ours before Fall is over. They love it. Especially robins and catbirds. When I first noticed these shrubs on our property, I actually really liked them because the birds liked them so much. Wish there were a way we could make the fruit sterile. Those berries do look good enough to eat. What my husband's focus is, is to at least cut down the tops of all the ones that are old enough to make berries. After we finally get rid of ALL our honeysuckle, we'll probably find out that the berries cure cancer, or keep us all young. lol!

Not sure if you happened to notice that the original thread is 7 years old? The issue has rectified itself. The shrubs in question are over 10 feet tall now and the rabbits can chew away without issue. By the way, not being able to chew on one particular shrub isn't going to cause them to starve to death over the winter as there are a variety of plantings in my yard (if you would have read down thread, you would have noticed that). Even if I had no other plantings in my yard...everyone else around me does. Evidently there is no population/starvation issue considering the number of rabbits we see in our yard on a regular basis and have seen on a regular basis over the last 15 years that we've lived here. I get the impression that you think I don't care for wild animals and frankly, that is insulting.

Do fern fronds grow back on rabbits foot fern? Middle section bare?

It should, but ferns are really slow when they've been cut back. Try sprinkling cayenne pepper all around it and see if that stops whatever is eating the plant. Unless you know what the rodent is, then you can repel accordingly.

Pellet guns, fencing, and live traps. The fencing has been most effective for me, but that's only because I am a horrible shot, and the live trap we got for Christmas doesn't seem to be working properly.

i tried everything and eventually put up a chicken wire fence, secured the bottom edge with tent pegs between the garden stakes. fwiw, i tried the black plastic chicken wire and the rabbits chewed right through it.

Got a fence up yesterday...managed to find a relative with a whole roll of chicken wire that he didn't need, so I got it for free! Also got one with the pellet gun today. Didn't have any more damage done to anything this morning, so the fence might be enough. Can't get them convinced to go into the live trap.

Get a good wabbit wecipe, or

Let them dig a deep hole. Shoot them in the head with your pellet gun. Put them in the hole. Fill up hole.

A nice, fast-footed dog that loves to run rabbits works for me...although that's not practical for everyone. I used to do the pellet gun thing, and that was somewhat effective, as long as I happened to be out in the garden with the pellet gun when the little varmints were out. Dog is better.

Fence.

My wild rabbits keep the outside edge of the fence neatly trimmed -- they want into the salad bar but can't get in.

I read that using rabbit poop around your garden might help as rabbits are supposed to be territorial and it deters them
Does it work I don't know but I had no rabbit damage and the neighbor did

I'll rent you my dog. She left me the head of a rabbit this morning. That may be the only thing she is good for.
