Basic squash sprout question

gamebird

I have a very small garden and in it I have set aside space for two summer squashes (Early Crookneck Yellow). I put two seeds in each spot and I now have two sprouts at each location. All four sprouts look healthy and are busy adding their first true leaf.

I have had terrible problems with mice eating the leaves off my radishes, chard, spinach and lettuce. So far they haven't touched the squash. With only two squash spots, it's real easy for one accident or pest to eliminate one of them.

I'm wondering if I should thin to one seedling per spot right away, thin to one seedling after a while (and how long?), or if I should leave it at two all along?

I don't mind if they're crowded, because the chard that I'd planted around them has been virtually mowed down by the mice. I set traps and I've caught about 20 of them, but it's a continuing battle.
