I posted this is seed saving but Remy suggested posting here...

Do you ever admitt how many seeds you have?

I just finished entering all my seeds into a spreadsheet and I guess I wasn't paying attention as I was going along... (3 nights). I just sorted and put everything in alphabetical order and am SHOCKED on what line number I'm on.

People looked at me weird when I used to say I had about 100 seed packs.... phew!.. that was THEN!

Anyway, do you ever admitt how many seed packs you have? What is the reaction?

Nope! Wont count them to find out either...lol..guess I am just in denial! ;)

hehehe No way Im counting the packs, but Ill count boxes.....not huge boxes mind you, just recycled boxes of varying sizes.

I have one box of edibles (mostly last years)

another box that nicely fits all the commercial sizeish seed packs(mostly last years)

And another box that fits the regular envy size packs(mostly last years)

and another box full of fresh 08 seeds that I snagged
and another box full of fresh 08 seeds that I snagged
And a small box full of seed packs that need to be filed in the above 2 boxes
And a smaller box where Im collecting packs for one of the big swaps.....

And a small tea box full of seeds that are absolute MUST HAVES for next year, not that any in the other boxes arent, ya know.....but, just saying....

prolly have some odd ones in my pocket, or in my backpack, and some in the car, and maybe some in DH's car, and his pocket.......

It would be difficult (and time-consuming) to add that up, but especially if you buy organic vegetables, you will save money. Last year I purchased two kale plants and at the time I bought them I thought they were sort of expensive, I think they were over a dollar apiece. But they produced enormous amounts of kale for many months, until our weather got really hot in the early summer. I think I could have kept them alive through the summer if I had tried, but I needed the space for other things, and by then the kale leaves were tasting bitter. But for all those months, I noticed that organic kale of the same variety at the farmers market was about $4 a bunch. If I had bought just one bunch each week I guess would have saved between $80 and $100 just on kale. I was eating at least that much of it, and giving more away. Then there was the organic looseleaf lettuce I grew. I paid $2 or $3 for a large packet of mixed seed (still using it this year) and also supplied myself, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Organic lettuce was going for $2 to $3 a head but since I cut my lettuce leaves with scissors and let them regrow from the roots, I used the same plants all fall and winter and spring and saved an awful lot of money for myself and others. Beets were another good example. They are ridiculously easy to grow and a seed packet seems to last a lifetime. Yet organic beets (heck, even non-organic fresh beets) are very expensive at the market. Not every vegetable provides such a drastic cost comparison, of course. Zucchini squash is usually pretty cheap at the store, and of course it produces so much on the vine that you want to pay people to take it off your hands. Some other vegetables can be bought cheaply, although if you buy only organic vegetables most of those will cost twice as much as non-organic and that makes your cost comparison with homegrown a little more meaningful. But as most every gardener points out, the taste of homegrown food is much better, and the knowledge that food you grew yourself is safe for you and your family is priceless. When you factor in pride of accomplishment, convenience at cooking time, and the joy and pleasure of being close to nature, the value of gardening rises exponentially.

I have in the past, and now that I have a garden again, I fully intend to. What will I save, and why? Varieties are such a personal preference, but I think right now that I will save seeds from all my OP plants, just to have a safety cushion. Until I have established my collection I think it's good to have a back up that, while maybe not a favorite, will provide something. For instance my dog wiped out most of my seedlings this year with her tail, and I have been scrounging to find replacements. Had I had a stock of saved seed, I could have popped in some new ones and been back on track right away. Once I have a good base of seeds saved, I will probably begin culling based on performance, vigor, and taste (in no particular order). Why am I going to save seed? Money. As much as I'd love to be able to save seeds to collect, catalog, and preserve lesser known or endangered varieties, at this point in my budget it boils down to money. And to have seeds to trade for more varieties, of course ;) When I saved seed in the past, I wasn't very cautious about preventing cross pollination, and once in a great while I had a surprise show up, but in general no, I didn't notice much variation that I hadn't selected for. By that, I mean only planting the earliest emerging seedlings, and saving seeds from the healthiest, earliest producing plants. I think after seven years of seed saving, I got my tomatoes to come in about a week earlier lol. However, I did notice that some varieties went down hill after a couple of years in regards to performance and health, while others seemed to become acclimatized to my garden and performed better and better each year. I even had one, I can't remember which now, survive five scorching weeks without water (while my mother was ill) only to throw it's gasping, wilted leaves up on my patio and present me with three tomatoes, to save seed from of course! This time, because I have scrounged mostly hybrids and they're mixed in with the heirlooms, I'm going to bag the blossoms. I don't mind a surprise from two OP's, but an f1 with a hybrid parent could be ugly. Thank you for the interesting questions! If I may, why not save seed?

My favorite restaurant supply store find is my measuring scoops. I gave a set to Diana in the my favorite things swap - you can see a picture on that thread. Restaurant supply stores are good for getting substantial stainless steel measuring cups and spoons instead of the wimpy aluminum ones that bend or dent. Or the big thin spatulas that can be used for tasks like lifting a layer of cake after you have split it horizontally to add fillings. In addition to what others have mentioned, they often have the cake pans with straight sides instead of sloped which is nice when making layer cakes. Around here there are two kinds - the ones that sell mainly food with a bit of equipment and the ones that sell mainly equipment - everything from utensils to major appliances. Smart and Final and Cash and Carry are the food kind - they are under the same ownership but Cash and Carry is bigger with more specialized food. For example, our Smart and Final has a few kinds of Torani syrup but the Cash and Carry has the full line plus some other lines of flavoring syrups. The equipment ones aren't all equal either. The area that has Cash and Carry has about 3 of the non-food restaurant supply stores. One carries nicer more varied stuff than the other two. But all have at least the basics like the stainless steel sheet pans, good cooling racks and lots of utensils. All the ones around here are open to the public. Keep advertising flyers printed only one side using typewriter paper to use to write notes, make calculations, etc. The ones written on both sides I save in a grocery bag to put in the recycle bin for fine paper. Got a heavy paper/card flyer, regular office size from a local deli in the mail today - will punch holes in it and use it for subject divider in ring binder. When I get their flyers half that size, glue a store flyer printed one side to them - then can use it to write material that I want to use frequently (e.g. phone numbers, listing of area codes, frequently used web site, e-mail addresses, etc.) on that blank sheet. Newspapers saved in different bundle. Use large sheet of scrap cardboard to build open-top box to organize magazines that I wish to save for future reference, to stand up on bookshelf. Cardboard pie boxes will do the job, as well - but they don't stand alone as well. Need to cover plastic window on inside so doesn't catch on mags with a sheet of (used) printer paper, held in place with a dollop or so of glue. We just had a shot of snow this morning - much earlier than usual. Brrr-r-r-r. With electric baseboard heating (and inadequate insulation in this rented townhouse), I can adjust heat room by room, so keep heat level low in kitchen, where I'm usually moving around. Turned heat up in bathroom yesterday. Keep it rather low in office, as well. Put on winter underwear this morning. When it gets cold I wear a sweater, batting-insulated vest and light jacket. Wear a hat to cover my head (only lightly insulated by hair). Get along O.K. until fingers get cold. My 22 year old Ford van has couple of leaks in roof, small holes in body and major hole in floor. Am getting some body metal, pop rivets to secure pieces that I've cut and shaped, tar to coat the outside under floorboard, fender, etc. and body paste to smooth over new metal to blend in with current body, then can sand and paint. Retrieved several spray cans with a dab of paint left from garbage, a couple of years ago. Several colours - but I plan to use only black and white, thank you. Not really a hard job. Should cost approximately $50. Better than scrapping the vehicle - which looks rather scruffy and some said that I should do four years ago when I did last body job. Takes a lot of materials and energy to build a new vehicle - so I say it's best to run the old ones into the ground. There are some rust spots on the hatch at the back of the 13 year old car, so need to use wire brush in electric drill to clean off rust, then smooth out with body paste, and paint with primer and finish coat. (Don't have right colour paint on hand). If I don't do it soon - I'll have rust holes to deal with. Much more effort required, then. Annual insurance (I don't carry collision coverage, of course) on both costs about 150% of what I paid for the van, 13 years ago. It had around 150,000 mi. on it then - about 190,000 now. Originally used it to deliver corn-fired heating stoves that I used to sell. Anyone know where I can find some hot air? Surely not produced by anyone around here! joyful guy

I haven't counted. I don't intend to count until I'm planting them out either in containers this winter or direct sowing. I KNOW that I have used two packs of 200 count plastic baggies. And then some. And of course the traded envies. And the commercial seeds. And well, I have too much. Thinking about slimming it down.

I started keeping track last year, though I've been trading for several years. I knew I had a lot, was shocked at how many... It's info I share with NO ONE, not my best friends, my husband. Let's just imagine that I have a large dining room buffet, with five big drawers (it almost touches the floor) and where there used to be table clothes and napkins, serving bowls and flatware, vases and table decorations, well... They aren't there now. If the buffet ever got wet, I think a jungle of epic proportions might sprout.

I'm a newbie to this. I didn't have seeds to trade but have recieved 3 freebie envies and was amazed how many I had the other day when I listed them. So I totally understand how you could get a great collection. Good Job there are just some things you don't need to share with others!!

On the original post, I said I don't tell anyone for fear of being though of as crazier than I aready am, lol.
My husband is aware of the collection. He doesn't know how much it contains, though he will tell you too many, lol.
I have a set of boxes:
Flowers collected from my garden
Flowers from other gardeners
Flowers from commercial sources
Tomatoes
Beans and Peas
All other Veggies

So you can see I have way too many!

Newp... don't count, won't count, refuse to acknowledge that I keep having to buy more and more stuff to keep it organized, refuse to acknowledge when DH and kids comment about my "unborn jungle" taking over cooking, eating, studying and sleeping spaces! :P

I have 2 large tupperware bread containers that are so full the seeds "pop" up when you open them..... I think kms4me and her buffet and Remys 6 boxes may trump me...

Thank God I'm not alone with the seed hoarding.....

My name is Kym, and I am the best at enabling...andddd I ...um...ah....have so many seeds...I had to get a book shelf to keep them all on..and then I had a friend tell me she was throwing out seeds, and i couldnt bear it..so I have more on the way...

Yes, I am addicted..BIG TIME, and it is all Angies fault..LOL J>K....but it doesnt help to have such great enabling friends...there are many more...

Dont count them, it would take too long...just enjoy them, and know it is better then other addictions. thats my story and i am sticking to it..LOL

LOL i am just laughing, ok i never tell anyone, the ONLY person who knows is my son, tabor, and that's because he shares in my addiction, slightly, LOL
i have a 5 drawer wicker thingi i got from aldi's, and two of them are full of seeds, vege's, and flower's, and wild seeds, we have to go thru them once i finish up with my marriage thing. MEN!!!! LOL tabor and i are gonna go thru them and get what we wanted out of them and mix them into little packets of what we are going to plant into certain sfg boxes. and then the others we are going to mx for the flower gardens and such, and then we are going to make the packets, whats left we are going to give away. orrrr...sasbe, although after reading this, i found the one trade i had left to do!! Hey Tom!! i knew there was one person, but i lost all my email, so i'll be getting that taken care of!! i promise :') Geeze i'm surprised you didn't hollar at me!!

Ya'll come back when you can beat me.....I have refrigerator my hub's bought me second hand,just for my seeds,crammed "FULL",boxes,lg plastic ice cream buckets,plastic shoe boxes,1 gal. size zip lock bags(arranged by month they sew inside under light on heat mat,WS or direct sew up until May...the shelves are full,the drawers are full even the shelves on the door is full.....and I'm still trolling the seed exchange forums and cackle like a fiend when a new catalog arrives.

medontdo: I thought I was supposed to be getting something from you, but I've been busy with work the past month. I finally got all my seeds sorted according to flower/shrub/tree/veggies. Now, I need to resort them according to wintersowing/direct sowing/spring sowing. So there's that.

No worries. I know you well enough to know what I need will come to me.

by the way, do you have any pennyroyal? I can't find mine. :(

I use what I can and trade the rest. Ok,I'll admit...I do sell some at farmers market.....so I can buy more seeds and plants....bwa...ha...ha....ha.

lol if i counted i would tell. but i cant keep up with myself lol i know i have over 100.
i use to keep boxes n boxes full but anymore i try to keep what im going to plant or hope to plant lol i have lots of hopes!
i have a huge notbook holder thing i use those baseball card holders in it for my seeds. ive been putting then in abc order for easy findings. still have a few envys full i need to go through. my seeds for tradeing are in a basket.

and yet...here I am,trolling several seed trading forums w/ Germania seed catalog in my lap w/ yellow hi-light marker....most of the pages are almost entirely yellow hi-lighted....LOL.

Good thing I'm in charge of paying the bills so hub's doesn't see cc statements.....but I do recoup my money plus profit during market season...so there..*G*

I do not have as much as Peggy, (thank you for making me seem moderate!). Thought I was a freak when I planted just over 100 things two years ago. That was, until last year, when I planted over 500....and that wasn't all the seed kinds I had.

Sheesh, if I counted now, I would have to confront the fact that I could not possibly plant everything. And that would mean I shouldn't trade.

I ain't riskin' it.

(I've done much better at un-chaffing seeds right away, and getting them sorted, labeled, bagged and filed though. That's a big improvement!)

Sure is GJ...good you brought it back.

What seeds I have left now are a full gallon zip lock bag each of flowers, veggies n herbs and about half a gallon of seeds for swapping, fridge crisper almost full...all awaiting on spring.
