Friends bringing seeds from other countries

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions how to find out if it's ok for a foreign visitor to bring with him commercial seed packets he bought at local stores there?

I have a friend coming from Japan next summer and would LOVE to send him a list!

Hi,
It is illegal without the proper paper work. That being said, I've had people bring me seed pkts. from other countries. If someone gets caught, the customs people will just confiscate the seeds, the person will not get arrested. So unless your friend gives them cause to want to do a thorough luggage check, they'll get through customs just fine.
Sometimes they don't even know, or care, they are illegal. At my tomato party this year, one attendee brought her seed collection from Canada. The customs person wasn't even worried about them. They were more concerned about the live potted plant nursery bought that they wanted to bring as a thank you gift. Plants need a special certificate to cross the border. The customs actually let them bring the plant finally after some argument that the soil wasn't soil but potting mix which contains no soil, lol.

I agree with Remy. A friend who travels all the time for her job tried to bring giant pumpkin seeds back from Germany--they were confiscated. Kimmie is so honest, she told them she had them... That's part of why I love Kimmie, though I wish she kind of/would've, hid them in her bra or something...

I just did a trade from Hungary. I recieved my seeds with no problems and he sent them in an envelope. I sent his seeds in a large envelope, and I had to fill out a green customs sticker. Now he said there are no seed restrictions to Hungary. So I hope he will recieve them without a problem. However, I did have to write seeds on the label, only becasue I mentioned it. I would suggest just sending them wrapped and just write gift on the form instead of seeds. I am not one to break laws, but for a few seeds, how rediculous of a worryment we have to go through. Agreeing with Sue, what a great thanks to Homeland Security! (sarcasm) If a terrorist was going to import something on seeds, he would not be telling the truth anyway, and will not fill out forms telling anybody that he is sending the seeds in the first place. Save yourself a lot of time and money, and just send them in a well hiddenway. Like a Hallmark card like Carol said. Christy

Fritz Hochstaetter also has a private housing address in Utah and I think the seeds are mailed from the US by a friend of him. But I am not absolutely certain of that. Ask Fritz by e-mail! I didn't order from him but had never problems receiving seeds from other European seed dealers. Jordi

Thank you, Joyful. I kept hearing croc, croc, croc, and I was just sure I was looking at a gator, gator, gator! But I started doubting myself as some of the people interviewed were so sure it was a crocodile. (Of course, they weren't identified as being any experts, so I don't know for sure that they knew the difference.) Because we do have crocs in south Florida, and they are making a surprising comeback after nearly being wiped out, it IS possible that there was one which ended up this far north. But I don't think it was the one they were showing on the news. If there were actually a croc AND a gator, I think the film footage I saw was the gator. That bulbous round nose and dark color just doesn't say "croc" to me. I keep checking the videos on You Tube, etc, to see if I can find one that actually shows a croc, but not so far. I wish there were more photos and films from the event. I would have liked to see it if the croc was actually there. That would have been very interesting. If I wasn't concerned about anything else, I would be concerned about that deadly bacteria in our lakes when the weather is this warm. And parasites. I let my kids swim in clear, cold springs that were closed off from the rest of the river (and river critters), but not lakes. And I discouraged swimming in the ocean, in most cases, for many reasons. When you've been in Flordia as many years as I have, you see some pretty scary things, even in knee deep waves. (I saw a very large shark once, trapped in a tide pool with only 2 feet of water in it. When the tide went out, it was stuck. And it finally slithered on it's side across the sandbar to get back to deeper water. I've also seen aerial shots of our beaches full of people, and all these sharks swimming near them that show up clearly from the air. I know shark attacks are rare, in the grand scheme of things, but I just couldn't bring myself to expose my children to that risk. (Or myself.) I have snorkled in the Keys, but I confess to having to check the area out carefully first, and I'm only comfortable when I can see for miles in every direction. And even that was years ago. I don't do it any more. My kids are grown now and do what they want, of course, but neither is fond of getting too carried away in the ocean. Splashing in the surf is about it for us, I'm afraid. I love to be ON the water in a boat or canoe, but not IN it. *shiver* Marcia Marcia

i am having a lot of fun with this game. cindy and carol, on #2, i laughed so hard at your answers. i will say cindy's mind is working towards the real answer. i am wondering if anyone will ever get it. just think of all the actions a dentist does to prep you - well, at least my dentist does it (and dang, is he one good looking man !!!!) amy was the closest on #1 and then shirley answered it correctly. #3 i might take some liberties with, because several of you are close, but i guess it's tough if you don't know her name. i think i've only used it two or three times in previous posts. finally, someone got my shoe size. the right answer to 4 has been guessed and answered correctly twice today, although in different words. so now, 1, 4, 6, 7 and 10 have all been answered correctly. and carol, yes, the razor was a great gift and to this day, i still use the same kind. i'm starting a new post where partners will be assigned. i'll post this over there as well. maryanne

that's like my kids, ahhh out of the mouths of babes, sometimes they are to honest!! i tell them all the time, there's a point when you just don't have to tell everything!! i was doing some searching from and earlier search, someone had said that the customs papers were really exspensive, and apparently someone else has been doing this, and said they are free, or very cheap, you just have to know WHICH papers to get. or something to that effect. can't you have this person send them thru the mail? you can get usps customs papers online for nothing. when i sent some seeds to canada, the post office lady filled her part out, and she told me what to put in, and i was a little worried as usual, but everything went great!! i just had to put that they were worth nothing and a gift and also i "think" that they were flower seeds. but i do realize canada and overseas is alot different! LOL ~Medo

i think my air may be leaking out of my head at this late/early hour!! LOL **giggle**

My daughter spent a month in Thailand this summer, she knows how obsessed her Mom is about seeds and plants! LOL! She brought home about twenty packs of seeds that she purchased while there. She even brought me a plumeria stick. She had no problems. Sharon

My mother taught me on a trip to Mexico to smuggle cuttings slipped into my hat band. She said, they never look there. Then she immediately got out her bag of cuttings and adorned all our hats with her cuttings. This is the same woman that on a trip to the Bahamas when we were all in elementary school ('64) had each of her four children carry 5 fiths of homade rum (the limit) back on the airplane. I kind of remember the stewardess looking askance at this heard of klinking stunmbling children. We were probably late for the airplane too. Living with my mom was always an adventure.
