Need help with front door color and landscaping.

We just purchased this two year old home that needs some help with curb appeal. I'd like to downplay the "red" shingles on the roof. Any suggestions on what color to paint the front door? We also need landscaping ideas too. Please see the picture of the house on the gallery side.

I'd paint the door the same color as the roof, but a little more intense. That will tie it together, but make the roof seem less bold. A contrasting color will make the red look redder, another deeper or brighter red will make it look browner, or whatever the undertone is.

Search this forum for "foundation plantings" or "curb appeal" for other threads on the topic to learn what the considerations are. Once you've researched a bit, you can ask some specific questions for input.

I think there are some other problems you've got going on more than just the door color. Spatially dark colors tend to recede while light colors come to the foreground. Currently the wall the stone is on is very dark and so optically recedes further than it probably does in real life. Also with the porch overhang the doorway entrance is very dark. The garage portion of the building is painted a color that is too light for the rest of the stone work and sticks out. To help de-emphasize it and help it recede a bit, I would try to match to the tone of the neutral stone work on the house. Preferably a taupe color. Also any green color you paint will accent the red. They're complimentary contrasting colors. They each make the other one pop. (So are Orange and Blue, Yellow and Purple, etc.) If you really want to down play the red, paint the house a deep taupe color as discussed above. (Taupe is a toned or grayed out reddish brown) It will wind up working nicely with the red roof color by complimenting it (since it has reddish undertones) but will feel and look more like a soft warm pale brown. I would then paint the door a reddish color to help tie in the roof. (Try not to fight the red). It will all tie in beautifully. Barring absolute hatred of red, you could paint the door the same color as the trim to bring some light to the entrance or go for the pop and paint it a forest green.

Hi Homebound, replied to your post over in windows and followed your link over here. A lot of wonderful ideas here! Your original idea of what to do in the front sounds real good. I would keep the trees too, it is so rare to have two large trees nowadays. I cannot see where they are relative to the edge of your yard and sidewalk but if they are far enough to the middle of the yard, I would build a nice wood covered patio designed around the trees. In other words, when it is done, it will look like you trucked in the trees to complement the structure. A nice low picket fence or rod-iron or ranch style along the front marks a nice boundary and also provides security. If you need the grass for children, I would then plant low brush along fence line to prevent people from being able to just hop over. An alternative will be to convert some of the lawn into flower beds and install secluded seating areas. It is nice to have a place like this where you can just do as you please from scratch! Need help picking shutter, garage door and front door colors!!

This is a recommended color from SW for Mindful Gray…homburg gray. I would do this on the shutters and the garage doors and leave the wood door as is. The two middle windows shouldn’t have shutters as the won’t fit appropriately, but you are not painting the siding and the darker outlines of the shutters will show if you don’t replace what was there. Personally, would like the house with out shutters and would probably paint the siding and garage doors and have no shutters at all.

zone is not enough ... we need a location.. big city name ... do you know your soil??? what direction does the front door face ... are the only shade trees the one on the left .... if there is clear sky above.. im not sure i would even call this part shade .. if this is a winter pic.. do you have a summer pic to see such?? winner winner chicken dinner is done.. more tomorrow ken

The framing of your photograph is too tight to get any sense of the 'landscape' but I think it is the mix of colours in the stone works that screws up the unity in the colours on the house. There is a stone up near the eaves that looks pink in the picture and you might want to try that for the door. Overall the facade is very busy what with the patterns the drapes make in the windows and some paintwork being white and some almost white and that stonework. Blinds the same colour as the door (pink) maybe.

I'd go with a rich burgandy or a plum. Something along those lines.

Changing the door color will have a minimal impact for the reasons Ink points out. I agree with the theory that adding unity of color would downplay the roof. But the door is not a prominent feature of this house in order to make it work. I think a broader view of the house on the site might get you some other ways to add curb appeal.

That is aweful architecture to be blunt about it.
