Comments (14)Your privacy issue sounds all too common for those who have homes set close together. There are several ways to address the problem, from installing an over head arbor $$$, installing sail shades $$, to planting large immediate gratification trees and hedges $$$ to simple umbrellas and panel trellises $. Sometimes doubling up on the type of screening works such as purchasing an umbrella while waiting for the shrubs and trees to grow in. In the two areas that I have privacy concerns I used two methods : planting and structure. Using Oldhami bamboo ( a clumping timber bamboo ) and Mexican weeping bamboo in one location and attaching bamboo roll up shades on an overhead arbor. In the photo below you can see how lattice can work as a good screen when used with shrubs planted behind on on the lattice : From Outdoor Kitchens and Dining areas From portfolioMay08.jpg combination of fencing and planting for a home in a closely placed development : From portfolioMay08.jpg For this patio , which receives a lot of intense weather conditions we decided to use metal instead of wood to create a privacy screen : From portfolioMay08.jpg This older photo of my back patio shows my simple overhead arbor with the dense covering of wisteria that offers 'overhead look in privacy'. It's a somewhat dirty vine to deal with. This particular wisteria blooms all year round , hence I am constantly having to sweep up the faded blooms off the ground. It also needs to be cut back heavily once a year to keep it from producing too much shade. From Outdoor Room...See MoreFire Pits -- trendy danger?
Comments (9)You can roast marshmallows over a gas powered fire pit. The gooey sugar that drops into the pit will eventually burn to dust or it can carmalize on the top stones or glass. I've never had one clog a flame ring or bar. Interesting that you mention the 'good smell'. When I smell smoke I cringe in disgust and try to get as far away as possible. I know if you can smell it then there is carcinogenic particulate matter in the air and that's the tiny stuff that gets into your lungs and causes all kinds of health issues ranging from asthma, lung disease and heart disease. Interestingly, from a design perspective, most people who ask for a fire pit want one that is easy to operate ( a turn of a handle ) and they don't want to smell like a camp fire when they turn the thing off. - I put a wood burning fire pit in for a family with 5 kids and a year later they asked to have it converted to gas because she had to bathe the kids to get the smell of smoke out before going to bed . Woody, I think the fire pit thing is popular in certain locations due to climate and probably even affluence has an impact. Here in Cal. we have pleasantly cool evening temperatures and few mosquitoes which makes sipping a bottle of Napa Chard around a fire an enjoyable event so they have been pretty common around here for ages. * Google what is happening in Southern Cal regarding their beloved beach fires. A current HOT topic ... the mayor of one beach town is saying " that fire pits are a part of our California heritage". photo - a gas fired pit with metal sculpture - Squaw Valley Lake Tahoe CA. Comments (5)We suggest going with a round option for a focal point that will tie the room together. If safety is a priority, make sure the burner is UL listed, meaning it will have undergone heavy safety testing. For a simple modern look to match your outdoor room, we suggest the Stonefire gas fire pit. If you want a unique look that subtly contrasts with the brown and pulls the neutral tones from the cushions, we suggest ourCove 12" gas fire pit or 20" gas fire pit. All options come with a matching burner cover to use as a functional table. Local stores would help you find a great deal: here....See Moresoften some backyard diy hardscape
Comments (6)It looks like what you have done is created some needed level space at the bottom of the property on a fairly steep slope which sits above what looks to be a wetland/marsh that is meant to move some significant amounts of water at times. The problem I see from a design perspective is that the two finished sections, left and center, and what looks to be a third in progress on the right side are all individual units with no connection or flow between them to make them work as a unified design element in the landscape. You have a bird's eye view from above and the land seems to have you restricted somewhat to a linear DIY approach without some major retaining walls and terracing. I think you need to make all these separate elements work more as a whole integrated unit. The seating area and firepit should be one larger integrated space. Get creative with the overall outline in your bird's eye view. Softening things may not be the best idea when you should be going BOLD. Make your stone work stand out and say something....See Moreirene_dsc
