Hmm, I don't think any of the ones you're growing are perennials. Asparagus is perennial, and so are many fruits, but not many veggies.

I plan on trying to grow cool-weather crops over winter under covers, but I haven't the space to grow indoors, so I'll let someone else take that.

Things like rhubarb, horseradish, asparagus, chives, lovage, mint, etc are all perennials.

Your list is all annuals and I too have no idea how to grow that stuff inside.

The pepper plants you will definitely be able to move in during the winter. I have heard of pepper plants lasting a few years. If the tomato plant is indeterminate, you might be able to get more out of it by bringing it inside when the season is over. I don't know about tomatillos or artichokes.
The rest you listed would serve no benefit to try and bring in. They are annuals.

Peppers and tomatoes are both tropical perennials - it's rare for anyone in North America to raise them that way, though. We generally treat them like annuals.

I do plan to bring some of my peppers (grown in containers) inside this winter - We'll see how they do next year.

Green onions can be perennials if you get the right ones. I'm growing evergreen bunching onions this year and hope to have a bumper crop next year. This year I'm only pulling a few now and then. Check out the pepper forum. Quite a few people overwinter peppers indoors.

indoors during the winter for tomatoes and peppers is possible if you have sufficient light. Unless you have a greenhouse, you'll probably need to infuse additional light by artificial means (flourescent etc)

Instead of trying to keep summer stuff going through the winter you could try planting specific cool weather winter crops outdoors. I am not familiar with your climate but assume it would be warm enough for many brassicas (cabbages, broccoli, kale, mizuna etc), broad beans (favas), maybe peas, the hardier lettuces, chicory, rocket (arugula), chard, leeks, celery, parsnips and possibly carrots and beetroot. These are all more or less doable in the UK and I'm sure SF is warmer and sunnier than here. . By the way - just because a plant is perennial that doesn't mean it will produce for you all year round. Just that the plant itself will keep alive. Artichokes are a good example.

Asparagus, artichokes, cardoons, multiplier onions, Egyptian walking onions, bunching onions (not the same as scallions), rhubarb and horseradish are the most notable vegetables I can think of which are true perennials.

Many herbs, fruits and berries are perennial. Strawberries do well in your neck of the woods, don't they?

Thank you all for the feedback! Well I think I'm going to do some research on winter crops. I'm having such a good time gardening I just cant imagine having an "off season". So peppers and tomatoes can be moved inside with good lighting? Ive seen articles about growing other veggies inside(with adequate lighting of course). Next season I will have to purchase all new plants? I'm so new to this!! But no question is a dumb question right? Thanks again:)

I'm with sffog. I still think it would be more rewarding to work with your seasons and grow suitable outside crops than to spend time and money on indoor set ups. You can eat seasonally and save effort. You live in California after all - where better to grow all year round outside? We manage to garden outdoors all year round over here and have nothing like your sunshine and temps.

Yep, you should absolutely be able to change your crops with the seasons where you are... and don't forget to rotate crops and perhaps use cover crops like hairy vetch/legumes between other crops as green manures to revive the soil.

And, on what to do with your annual crops when their season is done; compost, compost, compost! :-)

I keep things growing in my garden all year long. It gives us much more variety but has taken a few years to understand what grows and when.

Without a doubt in your site you can grow crops continuously through the year, as our UK posters suggest. Further, if your soil is well amended you can grow two crops in the same spot. One obvious example is lettuce and tomatoes, with the tomatoes later shading the lettuce during the warm season and extending its harvest, or seeding your winter greens under the summer beans, a couple of weeks before pulling them, so that the greens are already fertilized for the winter. Lettuce and various type of alliums also go well together, the lettuce mulching the allium.

i have a friend who grows the pepper plants and tomatoe plants inside, and he just goes by and shakes them once a day. and so they will pollinate themselves. he has had them 5 yrs now. that's a long time, i can't keep a plant that long!! LOL

Isn't San Francisco in zone 10? Without snow, frost, or insect kill-offs, you may not need to go indoors. Or, grow plants of the right variety (size) for containers, and move them indoors only when the rare colder night comes along.

When I lived in Santa Cruz (SFBayArea), there was a huge tomato plant in the old garden behind the Victorian house (where I lived). One of the renters told me that the tomato had been there for years. I assumed that it survived the winters okay. Now I live in San Diego. The first thing I did (when I moved into this house in January) was put in five different types of tomatoes, hoping to establish a permanent planting. I didn't invest in cages -- instead, I planted sunflowers. Now the tomatoes are kind of leaning against the seven-foot-tall sunflowers. I am hoping to harvest tomaoes from this patch for years.

From your list, artichokes are perennials, but you only get one crop/year.
Peas, lettuce, carrots, potatoes, beans and onions: you can get 2 crops/year, but you need to plant new plants or sow new seeds.
Strawberries are perennial here and can become quite productive after a couple of years once they get some size.
You can grow cool weather crops over Winter here (brassica family stuff, like cauliflower, cabbage, etc.)
Then you can get your heat-lovers in for Summer.
Someone mentioned cover crops. Great idea and works very well here to save and nourish your soil for upcoming crops. Find you a source for Vetch seeds (excellent for your tomato patch over Winter), and Clover and Rye.
Me, I wouldn't especially want to go to the trouble to grow stuff inside in this mild climate or even try to cover stuff up outside. I would just make a plan and plant what the season gives you outside.

If you really want to do some good research on winter crops based on an author and organic farmer in Maine, check out "The Four Season Harvest" by Eliot Coleman. It is available on Amazon. Truly informative and well-written. The answer he gives is not just "build a greenhouse". It is much more intricate. He goes into ALL the winter options except for going hydroponic. He discusses the biology of the plants during winter, how to make them hibernate during winter, what happens under a cold frame, etc. He goes through each vegetable family and tells you how to plant them (and when) specifically for a winter harvest. He also goes into storage options. Again, the best book I've found on winter gardening. He gives you the knowledge and since he's based in Maine, gives you a great deal of confidence. Within the first few pages he reveals the secret-- which needless to say has nothing to do with fertilizers or containers. It has to do with your geographic latitude.
