Drainage

As we now have at least one portion of one side of the house plant and tree-free, I was wondering if I ought to dig down and place some gravel (or something) for drainage.

We have no weeping tile around the house.

I called a local cemetary and found out that they bury the caskets at 9 feet for a double, and that 6 feet is sufficient for a single.

So, I know how far down I need to trench. But how wide? And how close to the actual foundation? And most importantly, what should the slope be?

How fine should the gravel material be? I'd love to use some of the concrete rubble we're producing from sledging up a sidewalk (it's mostly rocks, anyway!)--I can post a picture if that would help determine whether it would be OK. Obviously big chunks wouldn't be appropriate--just wondering how fine we need to sledge (unless it's a totally bad idea).

Any info or suggestions for further reading would be much appreciated, too.

Thanks.
