First losses of the season

firstyear

I remember waking up this morning, looking at the raised beds and wondering if they should be watered. The soil was moist about a half inch below the surface and I knew rain showers were coming tonight, so decided it could wait. Big mistake. For some reason it didn't occur to me that my direct seeded crops only started popping up about 2 weeks ago and how quickly a 90+ degree day can dry out the soil. By the time I got home from work, about 50% of the carrots and 25% of the beets were keeled over dead. Luckily, the lettuce and peas were much further along and appeared none the worse for the wear. Guess it was good to get the message now when there's plenty of time to reseed rather than July.
