Yet another retaining wall thread

Yes, I've searched. :) I can only read about 100 threads before my eyes glaze over....

My problem is that I'm on top of the retaining wall.. I need zone 5 hardy shrubs/small trees or vines/climbers that can be planted within 3-4 ft of a masonry wall, to hide the nieghbour's sheds. I don't mind the slow growing ones, I can fill in the vertical space with annual vines until they grow up. I don't want to do any digging to control invasive roots, but I don't mind having to prune a *little* above ground. The area is either full sun or part sun.

There is very little info on root systems when perusing garden sites. And the threads I read here on retaing walls were either about building them or hiding them... hiding it is my neighbour's problem ;)

On my list of candidates are:

Irish yew

box

holly

roses

honeysuckle (NOT japonica)

damson plum

fig

gooseberry

I'd appreciate any info on roots, and any other suggestions.
