I have a garden with purple and yellow flowers with some white and bright pink accents. Purple and yellow are opposites on the color wheel so they are a classic combination. It is softened by the fact the purple is more a lavender and the colors are spread over a large area with lots of green. You have red probably with the monarda. You can look at the color wheel and see green is the opposite of red, so colors near green will give a punch. Dark blue/navy is also often paired with red, but we'll have to rely on others for suggestions on that one (containers/accents?). Colors closer to red (orange,pink, etc) will be more soothing (in theory although red is very warm so I would tend to want to tone it down).

I would be very interested in the ostrich fern, red bergamot and red twig dogwood. I have buttercup, virginia waterleaf (have in lots of places that aren't wet lands), jewelweed,lots of violets (purple, yellow, white and blue woodland types), trillium, maybe some toothwarts, woodland phlox and other items. Only thing is will be a week or so before can go to my other place and get them. Will be going and moving alot of things over then. If you are interested, plmk. Monarda (beebalm) didyma 'Jacob Cline' is reputed to be one of the best for our area...less prone to powdery mildew in a moist climate. Bonus - it is favored by hummingbirds. Because it tends to bloom pretty much all a once, I pinch back about 1/3 of the stems when the get to about 8-10 inches tall. While the rest of the stems are blooming, the pinched stems take awhile to branch out and continue growing, so they come into bloom later...thus extending the overall blooming season. Being in the mint family, Monarda does spread by runners. But in my yard it is only mildly invasive & pretty easy to control...I just avoid planting it close to other perennials or shrubs so I don't have to disturb anything when I chop out chunks of the Monarda. Early spring is a good time to divide & share it or dig out an old clump & put back some of the newer growth. Here is a link that might be useful: Monarda didyma 'Jacob Cline'
