Landscape edging - need advice please

Hi, I finally had my front flowerbeds landscaped today and had a question I hope the group can help me with regarding the edging. Previously I had this hideously ugly concrete hexagon things edging the bed. The landscape designer convinced me that artifical edging was not necessary and they would put a "trough" around the bed that would keep the mulch in. Sounded good to me since I hated the previous concrete edging. Now that it's done though I think the bed looks kind of unfinished and messy. Does anyone else use this technique for their gardens or flowerbeds and does it really keep the mulch in? And what do you think of how it looks? Also, and ideas on how to conceal the drain pipe?

I'd greatly appreciate any and all opinions.
