Have: Cyperus alternifolius - umbrella plant

Hi,

I have a large cyperus growing in my greenhouse pond. It's too big to take in this year so I'd like to trade it for something that is perenial here in WI. This is pretty large (maybe too big for a flat rate box so I'm worried that it may be kind of expensive to mail). I would have to get a named day lily or hosta for it or some other nice perenial that I don't have. No indoor plants right now I'm full up. Not for postage, sorry.

I am starting a bog garden and could use your cyperus.
for trade:
I have a daylily which I just divided into 4 or 5 sections, maroon with yellow throat.
Knipfoia (red hot poker)
bearded iris blue/purple
dusty miller
hens & chicks
peony tubers
let me know if you'd like any of these, thanks

Hello, I have a chunk of umbrella palm (Cyperus) from mine that I divided when I took down my water garden for the season. This plant grows in shallow water or wet soil, easy to overwinter inside. Mine gets about 4-5' tall outside. This will be moderatly heavy to ship. I'm looking for interesting houseplants (varieties of aspidistra, aglaonema, or philo would be great!). I love hardy perennials but its really pushing the limit here for planting now, although I might try a daylily. Thanks! Frances

When I purchased my Umbrella plant about a month ago, I was shown how to propagate with great results. Same as Terramadre explained accept to stick in moist potting soil and place in a baggie. As soon as I came home with the plant I had to try it out. I took 6 cuttings, potted up using potting soil in 3" pots, and placed in a tray half filled with water, placing in a shady area without the bag. Within two weeks new growth was shooting up the centers. Next I took four plastic 6 packs that annuals come in and put cuttings in all those using rooting hormone. One of the 6 packs I planted with cuttings that had yellowing leaves just to see what would happen. To my amazement they all have new growth on them as well. Even when I lived in zone 6b I have seen it sometimes overwinter. If it was planted up next to a brick wall and we had a warm and sunny winter. I think there is more to its survival than the cold temps, I think the moisture level plays a role and how severe the weather was during the summer. I've heard that some plants can handle winter cold better if they don't go through a hot summer. I'm always surprised at what survives and what dies over the winter. I've seen delicate tropicals survive and hard core northern plants fail.

I inherited both the daylily and the peony, and am sorry I don't know the names of either of them. The peonies were pink or white, but now they are mixed up so am not sure which is which.
One of my gesneriads is a strep: blueberry cream, the other is an orange sinningia.
