Need help landscaping ideas for SMALL yard!
Comments (2)I cannot see the picture really well, but it looks like it might work for a kind of secret Garden. Although I have a niece in Denver, I haven't talked to her about what grows there. I know www.highcountrygardens.com has plants that are for your area. They have some good ideas. When you want to xeriscape, do you mean you want that to be a low watering area? What I found has helped me is that I look at the space and try to imagine the colors, shapes and sizes of plants I want...combine that with the amount of sun and how much water it will get. Then I have a good idea what I am looking for before going to the nursery. It might also help to start from the back (taller plants) and work forward...kind of like painting a picture. I used to go to the nursery and pick plants I liked, then got home and had no place to put them! Study the shape and color of plants you like, then take it to the nursery and ask if they have one with sim shape and colors that would work in your situation. I am sorry I cannot suggest specific plants. I am in Southern CA and we are Hot & Dry and I have alot of sun! One plant that I would love to put in a Rock Garden like setting is a Mugo Pine... it is such an interesting looking shrub. Maybe an Alpine looking Rock Garden would look good? Another direction... if you added a decorative Arbor and maybe something like a Clematis... would the plant get sun, as it climbed? There are alot of varieties and the roots like shade and the rest likes sun. With it being a fairly shady area, you way want bright colors or at least some bright green or yellow folliage to brighten it up. Another thing I have learned is that low water use and drought tollerant are 2 differant things. Others may laugh and think I am silly for not realizing this, but as a beginner (which I feel I will always be...as I keep learning new things) it has me confused. It really looks like it will be a pretty little corner when you are done. One more thing...a flagstone path would be cute...be sure to have a focal point (Bright flowers, sculpture, bench)at the end. They always look better if the look like they are taking you someplace interesting...See MoreLandscaping ideas for sloped front yard
Comments (5)Ahh yes the challenge a front yard like that. Well, I have many different ideas. I dream of being able to landscape with a hill like that. I find slopes that angle down and towards the viewer present such a vast array of opportunities for the landscaper and gardener. Budget would be my first point of concern. Working on a hillside can get expensive. Becuase any terracing or grading is a project in an of itself. But if it were my yard.... I would start off with about 3 small rock terraces. I would NOT run a straigh line across the yard and make a short wall (IE what a typical terrace invokes in most peoples mind). I would do a small semi circle wall say about a 5 radius in near proximity to where the steps level out and go near the garage. I would terrace out a small area and us a punch accent tree/shrub with small ground cover. I would probably go with a smaller serpenting wall near the top. about half way down I would try and do the most difficult part of the project and cut in a few small medium/ large boulders for a rock outcropping (particullarly effective fromthe Middle TN plateu east). Finally at the bottom I would do another small stone wall. If I were real adventurous would probably add a small pond / water fall at the rock out cropping. Since I would be more interested in the moving water than standing water, I would go cheap, such as getting a couple 55 gallon drums and burying them or a Water Trough from TSC (Tractor Supl company) to catch the water, using a big pump to push it up the hill and have a high flow rate. All of this work would be trying on the hills side. Take some time. Probably require some professional assistance / advice depending on your involvement level etc.... Naturallly I will answer any questions you might have. Of course you have a plethera of planting choices nad I have just as many ideas, but it depends on your tastes and interests. Well so does the rock work....See MoreSmall Yard Landscape Ideas
Comments (3)Aly, If you can identify your needs or desires that you want to get out of the back yard space then that will help you shape your ideas for it. We know that you have kids and a playstructure so that is one obvious need for a flat space that is either covered with lawn or playground fiber that they can safely play upon. Then you mentioned you have a busy street which means a fair amount of traffic noise and you have the concrete drainage v ditch. Either a hedge or a layered planting ( small tree(s) some shrubs and some perennnials layered together ) planted towards the back end of your narrow yard would help visually and minorly with sound mitagation. As far as what those small tree and shrubs are depends on the amount of maintenance that you want to incur and or if you desire a particular color or fruit production. .... and of course your planting zone needs to be known before any plants can be chosen. How you walk from one area to another also has to be planned for as well. So you can see it is a multi-pronged process of discovery and planning that is highly responsive to the family who lives/ plays/ entertains/ in that space....See MoreLandscape ideas for small back yard space
Comments (0)We have 12' x 28' yard space between our back/outdoor living porch and our detached garage. It gets limited sun. This is what we look out at from the porch while eating/relaxing. We are leaning toward a flagstone type patio with grass, moss or similar in between the stones, (we had this in our former home). We plan to have a planted area along the garage. The second door at the back of the garage will be the access for lawn mower etc. We're considering a small step down with a larger landing area to accommodate that unless there was some type of natural looking ramp (ha!) we could incorporate. Not sure what to do at the end by fence as it slopes down. Plantings? Water feature? (we like more natural looking water features, not a fountain). Thanks in advance for suggestions/ideas....See MoreRelated Professionals
