Who has an idea for cheap, but attractive containers ?
Comments (7)The plastic ones at the garden center are nice sometimes, especially the white ones IMO. Walmart ( I know, I know, ugh) usually has cheap ones in ther garden center. You can always spray paint them if you like, they have paint for that now. Even cheaper is the plastic storage tubs at Target, five or six bucks for a large one. Drill a few holes and you're good to go, just don't buy clear ones. Nice plastic garbage cans, laundry hampers--I would recommend the found items route. Check goodwill, too, get creative--anything that can be drilled! AS...See MoreCheap Containers
Comments (43)treeskate, I've been making several containers of that size. This year I'm using 1x10 pine boards and 2x2s. I get the cheapest pine boards they sell at Menards. For a 3' long box you can get 6' 1x10 boards and cut them in half. 1x10s are really 9" 1/4 wide so use 2 per side. Screw them into a 2x2 and then screw the sides in to make a box. For the bottom I use an old piece of 3/4" plywood that I have laying around. Screw the bottom into the box and drill holes for drainage and you have a planter. Paint it inside and out with a porch and floor oil based paint and it will last. That Glidden stuff Home Depot sells is really good and they have various colors. I would estimate for your project you'd need (using prices at my Menards here in Chicago). 2 6' 1x10s for front/back $9 1 6' 1x10 for sides $4.50 3'x 1.5' 3/4" plywood ~$5.00 (you can scrounge for this) 1/3 gal oil paint $7 ($20/gal) screws ~$2 1 8' 2x2 $2 So total cost is between $25 and $30 If you dumpster dive you can sometimes find 3' scraps of pine for free! :-) Click on the link below to see 2 of the new boxes I built using pine. Comments (8)If I were to make a device that served as an attractive bait station for slug pellets, I would start with a flower pot and paint to taste. Or, I would get one that is already painted with a pattern I enjoy. Gee, these are nice: Then I would get some twine and metal washers Then I would put a knot into the twine and slip a metal washer on to it. That would serve to hold the pot onto the twine once the drainage hole was slipped onto the twine from the same end that the washer was placed. At the other end of the twine, I would slip a metal drain basket up until it was concealed by the flower pot and let that serve as the bait holder. I would then put a knot in the twine below the basket to hold it in place. I would slip another washer between the basket and the knot if the hole in the basket was too large to allow the basket to rest on the knot alone. Another knot and washer a few inches further down would serve to weight the twine to the ground so the slugs could clime up....See MoreAttractive, hopefully cheap, mulch that will be gone next year?
Comments (4)I do have a lot of allysum seed - and that is one thing that may be welcome back next year! Wave petunias are lovely, but I don't want to put too many holes in the cardboard as these weeds are dreadful...just putting in spots for my blueberry and strawberry plants.... also - wave petunias would be pricey to purchase.....are they easy to start from seed?...See Moregregbradley
