Question about onion layers

This year I'm growing onions for the first time and am very pleased. My Dixondale onion sampler onions are growing like crazy. I planted them in four containers with about 8 inches of ProMix BX soil mix and fertilized with Dynamite Red (9-month fertilizer). We've had lots of rain lately but since the containers are well-drained, the onions seem to be thriving.

Most of the onions now have anywhere from three to five leaves, and I am aware that the number of leaf-spikes (leaves) determines the number of layers.

So is the number of leaves (therefore the number of onion layers) genetically-determined? Is there an upper limit for the onions we grow? Or does the number of leaves/layers continue to increase as they grow if they get everything they need? Do large onions have more layers or just larger layers?

Anybody know? What's your experience?
