Cool weather cover crop?

Hello,

I want to plant a cover crop to use as mulch later on. The day time temps around here are in the 50s and nighttime is in the 30s/40s. I want to do the serious planting and translplanting in about six weeks, so I need something that grows fast and well in cool conditions. I tried buckwheat last year but it needed the warmer temps to really get going and I wasn't crazy about it as mulch for keeping out weeds (was like using thin sticks). Anyone have any suggestions? Thank you very much!
