Advice on rectangular bed

Hello all!

I have absolutely come to love this forum and have learned and gotten some great ideas from the posts. However, I wanted to post my question and see what ideas you can give.

After much back breaking work, I have cleared out a section of grass that is about 4'x22'. I hated to mow it, so I decided to make it into a garden. It is between my neighbor's house and my patio. It's gets full sun during the morning hours.

So, my question is, what recommendations do you have as far as what I should plant there? (Yes, I probably should have had all this planned out BEFORE I cut up the grass, but...!!!). I live in Montgomery, AL - which I believe is Zone 8. I really would like some color as this is an area that I can see from my living room inside. I don't want azaleas (I have 3 in the front). I thought about hydrangeas as I saw in this month's issue of Better Homes and Gardens how some people used them in their yards, but thought they may be too big for that little area.

Thanks again for any help you can give.
