Low maintenance garden

Reading the replies to the Modernist Curve thread reminded me of an Amsterdam apartment I rented back in the 70's that was decorated and furnished in the then poular 'Skandinavian' style. After the place was vacuumed and straightened and polished it looked great, solid lines of pale wood, white shag pile rugs on polished wooden floor. The moment you put a newspaper down on the table or arm of a chair the effect was ruined. Anyway, I was wondering if we look for low maintenance gardens that have the same perfected nature and if a real low maintenence garden is one that can take a bit of neglect and doesn't look like a dogs dinner as soon as the grass is an inch and a half long?
Of course mo blo and go teams and the people they work for who treat gardening as if it were a janitorial task only help in creating an addiction to tidiness that leads to meat ball shrubs and not a leaf in sight.
