Is this a grafted rose or own root, Tammy? If it's grafted how close to the graft were the chewed off? If there is any stub of cane left above the graft or if it is own root it should come back OK in the spring. If grafted and they were chewed off below the graft it's pretty much toast. I have had rabbits burrow into my mulch and nest and they did a number on several of my grafted roses as well as a few own root minis. The minis bounced back well the grafted HTs and floris that were chewed off high came back but poor Ingrid Bergman was lost because they chewed her down below the graft. As for trying to root those cuttings I don't know if it would work or not but you have nothing to lose in trying!

It wilted due to stress. Maybe a lack of water. I'm guessing there were few root hairs on the roots. Transferring from a system where roots are constantly wet to one where they are only slightly damp can be a shock. Try watering heavily. They might pull out of it. Sometimes a plant can look like it's dead when it's in shock, but pulls out just fine. But, sometimes they really are dead. I grow all plants hydroponically at the beginning. All my soil garden plants are started in an ebb and flow system. However, these plants are in coco coir and develop some really nice root hairs. My plants rarely experience transplant shock and when they do, it's because I did something clutzy like dropped them when pulling them out. I've transplanted from DWC (where the roots just dangle in water) to soil, too. The plants suffered for a day, but pulled out of it. I thought they would die. Something to consider is that if you plant in direct sunlight, that could hurt them, too. It's best to transplant to soil on overcast days or shade the plants with something. I'm guessing the basil is of pretty good size, too. It's best to harvest some of the leaves to reduce transpiration if the plant is used to constantly being immersed in water. I wouldn't do it now as the plants seem to be overly stressed, but in the future you might keep that in mind.

Image by: wintersown Daffodils forming seed pods Deadheading a plant (removing the wilted and faded flowers) will also prevent the formation of seeds from those flowers. Why is that? When a plant is pollinated seeds will form at the base of the flower pod...above the stem, but below the blossom. If you pinch off the faded flower then the area where seeds will form is also removed. I'd like to keep my plants looking tidy. Can I do some deadheading and then collect seeds later on from the new flowers when the plant reblooms? Yes! This works fine. Most annuals, perennials, and biennials will put up another flush of blooms if the plant is deadheaded after the first time it blooms. By removing the flowers the plant is "frustrated" in its attempts to set seeds and so it will try again....that's why deadheading will usually produce a second set of blooms. Let the second set of blooms go to seed and collect seeds from them. Are there some plants that might not rebloom? Yes...there are. Most spring blooming bushes will only set one flush of blooms regardless of their being deadheaded. With my azaleas, hydrangeas, and forsythias I do not deadhead them if I want to save their seeds...there are many other bushes that are like this, not just these common garden favorites. Also, I never get a second set of blooms from plants with tuberous roots, or those grown from bulbs. My daylilies don't rebloom, my iris don't rebloom, and my tulips and daffodils don't rebloom. There are some modern hybrids of iris and daylilies that are called "reblooming" varieties and so you can try deadheading those hybrids and hopefully they'll rebloom and still set seeds for you. I personally do not have experience with them so I cannot say yay or nay about any expectation of a second flush of blooms that will set seeds. How do I learn if my plants will set a second set of blooms? Deadhead less than half of the spent blossoms. Seeds will set on the remaining faded flowers. Observe the stems where you removed the faded blooms and look for signs of new bud growth. Hopefully, in your garden zone, there will be sufficient warm days to produce more blossoms and you'll be able to collect another set of seeds from the same plant. Experience is a good teacher....you'll enjoy learning about your plants and will be fascinated by the reblooming process. Trudi

i was told.. for what that is worth ... some dude contracts to provide bigboxstore with say.... 5000 plants ... for whatever reason ... he has only 4500 ... so he just throws in whatever.. in this case other blue spruce he may have... and low and behold.. you end up with something extra ordinary ... one theory ... the high income dude whose job it was to attach those labels doesnt know a pine from a spruce ... and cant be bothered to care ... second theory ... and the last ... they are seed grown and you have some cool new variation on a genetic theme ... or maybe the pot tipped over for 6 months.. and it was reacting to grow up like its supposed to ... crikey... i coujld probably keep going ... oh.. is it grafted??? .... the old theory that some scion from a branch simply refuses to turn into a tree.. and still wants to be a lateral branch ... who knows ... doesnt leave you much to decide on location.. does it.. lol .. i am going to think about the odds of all the above.. and where i would place it .. and report back ... since you have time ... great on planting time ... ken ps: the dark green down low.. might make on think those 5000 pots were close together for a long time ...
