Is there any vegetable cutworms don't like?

The weather is still not warm enough here for me to feel comfortable setting out tomatoes, peppers, or melons, or sowing beans.

Some of the peppers and tomatoes are still pretty small, barely have their first set of true leaves, and I'm wondering if they'll be large enough to withstand the rigors of outdoors in a couple of weeks even if they're adequately hardened off.

I'm thinking of cutworms and know I've set out young plants in years past with a couple of nails around the stems to keep cutworms from them. But I don't remember what plants, maybe melons.

Do cutworms like all young plants or some more than others? How much does the size of the plant have to do with it? Which ones should be protected?
