Additional bell pepper plants from cuttings?

Has anyone tried propagating bell peppers from cuttings? The internet and GardenWeb both have claims that it can be done, but it seems to be a rather complicated process! Rooting compound, air-layering, or small warmed and lit cutting boxes...

What I want to know is if I can make a cutting of a pepper plant branch and put it into very moist growing mix and wait for it to develop roots? The ease of doing this with tomatoes gives me hope, with the knowledge that pepper plants are usually slower-growing and developing. But I've never tried it, and this year I was able to get only two pepper plants germinated and growing, whereas I'd wanted six.

If you've increased the number of your pepper plants this way, how did you do it?
