building a Natural Swimming Pool / clay bottom swimming pond
Comments (10)Really neat. I live in Flour Bluff on the east side of Corpus Christi, and I am wanting to build a natural pond in my sandy backyard using clay and then lining the bottom with white rock and limestone. I want to make the pond look like the Comal River in New Braunfels ( a natural spring fed river) and plant it and stock it with plants and fish from the river. I live in a Zone 10A climate (nearly tropical) with an average annual low of about 31F. I have a tropically landscaped backyard, and I think having a natural spring looking pond would be awesome underneath my jungle canopy I am starting to grow in the backyard. I would like to make the pond about 10 - 12 feet long, about 8 ft. wide and about 4. 5 - 5 ft. deep. with a small waterfall and filtration for the fish and aquatic life. I would like to power this with a small solar panel attached to the fence or the roof of the house (where it can get some sunlight). Any suggestions? Thanks, John...See MoreSwimming Pool Equipment Cover
Comments (0)Photos show the 'before' and 'after' our pool equipment was covered. Covering is lightweight, maintenance free and a filter motor noise reducer. The metal frame was found in a dumpster, coincidentally the shape of the equipment group. The 'adobe house' pieces and windows are cut with a saber saw from 2" styrofoam 4'x8' panels from Home Depot and stucco-finished troweled with a single mixture of Joint Compound, white exterior acrylic paint and TiteBond III wood glue. House sections are positioned together and connected to the frame with pieces of 'Industrial Strength" self-stick velcro so that they can be removed for servicing the equipment. Log beams deco are cut from foam pool 'noodles' & painted. The light weight and durability of the styrofoam are perfect for this kind of project....See MoreThis year I resolve to.....
Comments (16)Murray, we northeasterners have zone envy this time of year. If it weren't for the shipping cost I'd order some things from Annie's Annuals...and you get to go there in person. Enjoy! I didn't know Verbena Bonariensis could get mildew. I forgot to wintersow those seeds so I'm thinking I can give them the cold strat it says they need using the coffee filter in fridge method. Other option I'd prefer is to plant them in seedling tray and stick it in my father's downstairs fridge. They need to be ready to move to pots before Easter when I'll need to fridge for food! That'll bring a holler and a hoot since I just bought some crocosmia & freesia bulbs that need to be stored in fridge until I pot up and start indoors April to try and get them to bloom outside this year. I had resolved to rein in my compulsion to try and have too many nectar plants but that was blown out of the water when I wasn't paying attention to my actions. My new resolution is to try and not stress over starting and planting out whatever germinates/survives my attention and then fight off the critters once planted out. My vision of the beds keeps expanding as I start more seeds and I'll regret the rush to try and raise/amend beds more, plant out and do spring clean-up all at the same time. I'm praying my father's health stays steady through that period not just cause I don't want him to have anything wrong...LOL. What will be, will be and we'll deal with it. So much anticipation this time of year. This winter's been a dark one and I can't wait to spend hours outside again while there's still light outside til 7,8&9 PM. Besides the stand of swamp milkweed I've got I have seeds for tropical milkweed. Instead of just putting Zinnia in containers out front by the garage I'm going to have very large containers of milkweed with small zinnias, sweet alyssum and little fennel plants. I got some more large storage containers at Costco which I spray paint silver gray to match my father's house (he hates these containers but real pots are just too darn expensive). I had hoped to buy a cheap drip irrigation system but doesn't seem to be in the cards financially now that I've added so many pot groupings with host/nectar plants around the house. I'd need more than one set-up and I'm certainly not the "handy" type. Instead of resenting the hours I know I'll have to hand water every day in summer I should be thankful I can move around, period. Additional resolution...appreciate what I have instead of getting freaked out that everything isn't the vision of my ideal. I've also decided to raise my little Monarchs in an outdoor enclosure this year. Something bothered me last year about the little cats having an unnatural life in those Glad containers. I intellectually figure they don't really care and the goal is to make sure as many healthy Monarchs are raised/released but just doesn't sit will with me. May change my mind when I don't have an enclosure ready by the time cats hopefully show up on milkweed and then it's Glad containers for the little cats once again...LOL. Sorry I always go on so long......See MoreNeed Advice On Removing An In-Ground Swimming Pool
Comments (8)I talked to my neighbor tonight. She said they used some of concrete pieces from the pool to fill the hole, then put in dirt/soil. It cost her $4000 to fill the pool (about 7-8 years ago). Her pool was cracked, had some problems when she moved in. A pool can add value to your house.......and you're retired, you got time soaking up the sun sitting by your pool. What a nice life! Are you really ready for a life without a pool? Pool can keep you healthy......and you could have pool party with your friends, without a pool you'd only stare at each other, not much fun though........just trying to save your pool from the dirt. lol...See MoreCynthiaCVA
