I never heard about burying the stem, I thought that was only for Tomato plants.

Also, I never heard about taking off leaves either...

John, they do gain more roots if you bury the stems, it just takes a while. I'm not sure if there is much benefit in doing it though.

There was a study done maybe 15 years ago at Auburn U in Alabama (could be wrong about location) which showed a benefit to setting peppers slightly deep, to their seedling leaves, when transplanting. The conclusion was that the extra inch or two of planting depth insulated the roots from hot, dry conditions at the surface. There was no benefit to planting deeper than the seedling leaves.

I've also seen pepper stems sprout new roots when planted a little bit deep, but nowhere near to the extent that you see with tomatoes. I've been known to transplant a little deep if I've let my seedlings get leggy when starting them.

Planatus - by seedling, you mean the sprout ones, not the first 2 true leaves?

I've planted the 2012 peppers a little deeper in their 2nd transplant, they are doing really well.

Should work fine, both tomatoes & pepper(hot & sweet) are in the Nightshade family with white potatoes, egg plants,tobacco,tomatillos,pepinos,ground cherries.
I never planted peppers plants deep, but I will do so now.

Question is, when do you start removing the bottom leaves prior to transplanting outside or do you wait until you transplant before removing them?

As to that part of your question, it is just any leaves that may touch the ground and so transmit soil borne disease. Just carefully snip them off AFTER transplanting to their final growing place.

Like others have mentioned, yes IMO peppers do benefit from deeper transplanting just as tomatoes do, just not quite as much or in the same fashion.

Thank you all for your response. Yes that was the question I was trying to spit out, thank you for your answer. I will make sure we remove the bottom leaves after transplanting to final their final growing place.
