In colder zone 9 locations the best approach is probably to plant a Brugmansia where it receives the most protection from cold in winter. In milder zone 9b locations like the bayside towns of San Francisco Bay Area, with proper siting against a south facing wall, they can even be in full bloom and foliage all through the winter. If you don't mind occasionally having it freeze to the ground, or going completely deciduous, in most California zone 9 locations they are perfectly adaptable anyway/anywhere you want to locate them, as long as you can give them enough water.

@puglvr1 They only bloom from the part that makes the "Y." I dont' honestly remember much about growing them in 9b. It seems they went semi-dormant and lost leaves, but didn't freeze back. They grow quickly, so if they die back, they will come back up and make "Ys" again next year. They usually bloom the first year. These were small cuttings when I planted them, and all of them are going to bloom eventually. @ut2nc You can buy the cuttings on eBay, or go to the Brugmansia exchange forum, and there is always someone giving cuttings away in the fall. You have to keep them safe from freezing over the winter, but they root very quickly. When I had them in SC, I would put the the trimmed limbs into a bucket on the back porch in the winter, and they would be rooted and ready to plant by spring.

I myself just started growing brugmansias...I bought some cuttings online ($1 a piece) late summer last year and very fortunate enough to see a couple of them bloom. Bought another batch in the fall but lost a couple of them (left them out too late) and bought more online 2 weeks ago (10 pcs. for $10 plus $5 shipping)--all 10 are now rooting very well in water inside the house.
