what was your grandmother's favorite flower, favorite color, or things like that that remind you of her? I may have something along those lines. some things you can look for: angel trumpets, love in a mist, love in a puff, just a few I can think of. you may find someone here that has those

I very rarely post here, but your request is certainly worth it. I'm so sorry you lost your Gramma. Doing a garden in her memory truly is therapy, and it will give you a special place to sit and remember all the wonderful time you shared w/ her. I lost a very special loved one a few years ago and we also did a memory garden. I used a lot of daylilies because they are so easy to care for and many have very special names that are appropriate for a memory garden. I'm including a link to Tinker's Daylily Database that you can search, you can put in your Gramma's name if you like (or anything you want) and see what results you get.

Other plants that I used were Forget-Me-Nots, 'Remember Me' Hosta, a Rose of Sharon (because in the Bible it's a symbol for Jesus and that was special to me).

Remember too that you don't have to plant the entire garden now. I understand your desire to because I felt the same way, but I've found it greatly therapeutic to be able to work in the memory garden and continue to add plants. If every inch of the garden is planned and planted there will be no room for future plants you find that you want to add...and you WILL find lots of plants that you want to add in the years to come.

Thank you all for your suggestions and kind words. It is definitely helping me planning the Memory Garden. My Grandma loved gardening and I think she would really like it.

Grandma's favorite color was blue and her favorite flower was African Violets. I can always remember her having AV all over the house and they were so pretty. She has given me lots of iris, hens & chicks and several other things over the years that I plan on moving to this garden. She also loved strawberries and chocolate, so I have added plants with names like "Strawberry Swirl, Candy Girl, Strawberry Ribbon Grass." Her name was Florence and I haven't found a plant yet with that name. I will definitely check out the link for Tinkers though. Thank you Heather for giving me that suggestion.

Grandma also loved birds and always had bird feeders outside her window. So I am adding lots of bird houses and feeders. We received a couple Angel garden statues for the funeral which I have also put in there. My husband made a nice bench for the center of flowerbed and I am hoping to add a few other decorative things also.

I actually do have Remember Me hosta, so I will have to move that to this garden also. Rose of Sharon is a great idea also and one of my favorites. You have a good point on taking my time planting things. I have felt like I had to get it done right away, but it would be nice to add things later on as I find plants that fould be perfect for it.

I thought surely there was a plant with the name Florence, so I did a search and found "Sunny Florence African Daisy" and it is beautiful! I have included a link. I'm sorry I don't have one to send, but I hope you find much comfort in your memorial garden.

I planted hydrangeas to honor my grandmother and there is a Halo type of this plant

How about Florence Vaughn Canna? Plant in spring and dig in the late fall. I just received and planted a full box of tubers. I will be happy to share them with you when I dig them up in the fall. (I believe they multiply quickly) Just store the tubers in peat moss during the winter. Keep this in mind and let me know if you ever want to give them a try. I am sorry for your loss. Gardening is great therapy.

I have a memorial garden too. Besides plants with my grandparents names I also have in there things that they use to grow in their garden and things that remind me of them. I also have some relics from the farm like an old mild can and my grandpas old walk behind tiller. I have a day lily called "family ties" that I could probably get a fan or to from if you are interested. You have so many nice ones I'm sure I could find something to trade for.

Hi Teresa, I'm so sorry for your loss. My grandmother is 100 and still very precious to me. If I were to plant a memory garden for a loved one I would want a "Peace Dove" in it. To me that symbolizes the descent into Heaven. There are several daylilies with the name dove in them as well as other plants I'm sure. I found "Freedom Dove" daylily @ www.songsparrow.com.

Her warm gentle touch will always be with you no matter what.

Nancy, Thank you for your kind words. I'd never thought of Peace Dove, that is a great idea. I was with Grandma all night before she died and when she did pass, and from some of the things she said, there is no doubt she was getting ready to go to Heaven. It really gives you a glimpse and faith that there is so much more after this life. It was very sad, but comforting to know she was going someplace better and no longer suffering. Teresa
