Can 4 O'Clocks Reseed In Containers?

I'm curious about this, I planted 4 seedlings in an 8" container and now I notice a new seedling poking through the soil and I'm wondering how this can be. Do they reseed in containers? They are growing very quickly and big, so now I may have to find a larger container to repot them in. I've heard that Four O'Clocks get very large roots. Would it hurt to transplant them again, I hate to disturb them but I think they would be better off with more room.

Any thoughts?

I am not an expert, but I think it is pretty hard to hurt 4 o'clocks
I think they are pretty tough & grow pretty easily.

They will reseed EVERYwhere. I have had seedlings pop up in half my pots! I think you'd best move them ... they get huge! Sounds like that pot isn't big enough. They WILL sulk ... mine sulked for 2 days last summer when all I did was move the pot. But they will probably survive, and they won't do well in that small pot.

That is not a problem here. I usually save seeds cause I will lose them from the cold weather about every 3 years or so. Last year I didnt collect seeds. And they dont hardly reseed here at all. Maybe one here and there will pop up. I have read everywhere that they do reseed but I havent had that experience growing them. I talked to a person who lives about 50 miles south of me(hes in the same state but different zone)and he says they reseed for him too. Thanks for all of the fantastic replys and I have many seeds on their way to germinating!!!! Darla.

4:00s are prolific re-seeders. I sow them outside - whenever. Just like you might do with cosmos, nigella, larpspur etc. They aren't going to germinate until it gets plenty warm, and it won't hurt them to be outside. Same thing with witner sowing - outdoors right now in containers. The difference is with Winter Sowing you have more control over the seedlings and the containers provide a safer environment than flung on the ground. I don't see any need to actually plant them under the soil unless you want to. Remember, they re-seed on their own just find wherever the plant spews them. Determine your own comfort level or try a few techniques. If you just have a few seeds, I would sugget winter or spring sow using the winter sowing method. If you have a bunch - just whip them out there.

An example of this might be blight resistance in American Chestnut trees..... A worthy read and planting endeavor, and join the American Chestnut Foundation, get some seedlings, and plant them.

Yes, I do collect the seed. The seed are large and the plant keeps producing flowers and as each flower turns to seed, the plant is continually producing seed unless you are deadheading. As the season continues, the seed can start dropping. In some areas this plant can become a pest because of the seeds dropping and because I believe the plant produces some type of tuber. I have not planted it in the ground because of that, but have always planted it in containers. I don't think it is much of a problem in my zone because I don't think they are hardy to zone 6, but in the warmer zones, I believe they do survive the winter and can become a pest. Very easy to start from seed, to collect seed, and start them for containers every year.

They can look like small shrubs by the end of the summer! I had some I stored in the basement for a couple of years...the roots I mean. Boy, did they get big!

I used to have these but because of their eventual size I decided not to use them anymore. They grow big but can easily be trimmed down to a size. They also grow very easily from seeds so to me it didn't make sense to overwinter them (I've very little storage for plants).

Do you think if I separate them into different containers, they'll make it and bloom? I have 4 in a either 8 or 12 inch container. If I take out 2 and plant them in another 8 inch container, will they be okay? I really would like them to bloom, this variety is Custard & Cream and are supposed to be fragrant, I'd be happy to see one plant bloom. I don't think I will grow them again after this year.

I've done some experimenting with traumatizing my four o' clocks in flowerboxes and seeing how they recover. They seem to recover fine from being dug up and having the intertwined root masses chiseled apart. Recovery from being completely lopped off also looks promising.

They smell really nice when they open. My only problem with them is that here in Texas, they tend to open around 2am.
