Hi. You can also dry jewelweed-- I. capensis seems to work better this way than I. palida. That way you'll have it when you least expect to need it. For fresh plant or dried, I simmer the herb (a two-handed handful for fresh, a good palmful of dried) in about 2 quarts water for about 20 minutes, then cool & freeze the tea in cubes, but I also throw it in a spray bottle & keep it in the fridge, & it feels soooo good.

Pretty much all native plant specialist nurseries and most well-stocked retail nurseries will have it. On varieties: Aquilegia canadensis is the one and only columbine species native to the eastern US and the mid-Atlantic region. There are a number of named cultivars; my impression is that differences in flower form and color among these are subtle. Jewelweed (Impatiens capensis/pallida) and Aquilegia canadensis have rather different preferred habitats. Jewelweed prefers moist to wet soil in shade, and can grow in swampy conditions; in other words, it does not demand "well drained". Aquilegia prefers well-drained soil in light to full shade and is especially good for "rocky woods, slopes, cliffs, ledges". However, Aquilegia canadensis is easier to grow in "average" garden conditions in our region than the many western US columbine species. (I checked information on the Aquilegia genus at USDA plants database. In addition to A. canadensis, the only eastern US species, there are 20 western US species, and one introduced European (A. vulgaris).)

I have not been able to grow the wild jewel weed which herbalists use for poison ivy in our Montana climate.I am not sure if it is growable in Colorado either since it is prefers the humidity of the eastern states and another likes the humidity on the western coast.. It is an impatien,, not sure if there any substitute for it in our drier climate or not..In the other hand my son who lives in Poison ivy land keeps a bottle of it from the local health food store just for the poison ivy..I would ask at a local nursery or call an herbalist they always know what grows around their areas..
