Best way to keep squirrels out of strawberries?
Comments (19)Arghh! The chipmunk(s) discovered the bed, I put netting up (hoops closer this year) and 1 strangled himself trying to fit through 1" mesh. But something (squirrels?) is still getting in and eating literally half the berries (I find the other halves). Pulling pegs out of soft ground and going back out the same way? B/c only a few pulled, haven't found a critter trapped. Put heavy stones on those places and I plan to make the bed narrower next year so we can get pegs in better. Someone mentioned pipe - that sounds good, go the full length, easy for me to move, but how heavy so squirrel doesn't move it? Would they just dig under? Thinking a 2x4 frame with chicken wire, but would have to re-do the bed to make it a series of beds with lids since current bed is so long. And how to keep them from digging under? I just can't think of anything that would be easy for me to (re)move to pick, but keep the rodents out. Help!...See MoreRaised SFG, how to keep bottom from falling out?
Comments (4)You might also consider a cinder block or 2 under the center for added support. At a foot above the ground they should be an ideal height and provide support for the center of the box with no worry about them rotting out due to water from above or below. I'd also look for some plastic "feet" for the bottom of my wooden legs if I were doing this. (I have some experience with wood rotting quickly due to prolonged contact with wet concrete over the course of a very rainy summer, this seemed to be much worse for it than constant contact with moist soil, which my SFG box that I placed on the ground elsewhere experienced.)...See MoreHow to keep chickens out of raised beds
Comments (6)Throw said chickens in stew pot...problem solved! lol I thought my 5+ year old hens were old. I only have 2 left out of the original 10 plus a rooster but they aren't good for much now except the very occasional egg and some chicken manure. Funny...mine love both cherry tomatoes and summer squash. Most of my garden is about 100 yards from where they range but I do have to keep them out of a few beds and I use a combination of temporary fencing and other obstacles to keep them away from new transplants and seedlings. After the plants mature they get access to the cherry tomato bed and a asparagus bed but not the bed that has cukes and pole beans this year....See Moreraised bed fence
Comments (3)The only way to keep all those animals out is to have a sturdy metal fence with the posts, with quarter inch hardwire cloth fencing one foot high at the bottom going underground about 6 inches and outward a foot from the fence (for the tunneling rodents), with electric wires along the bottom and about 2 feet up (for the rabbits, woodchucks and deer.) I know this from 40 years of frustrated rodent trapping gardening experience. That will be my next fence....See Morelucillle
