Help with my stone path

I have a stone path along the side of my house that connects the front yard to the back. I was going to dig out the stones and just plant grass because it looked like there were just a few stones laid down here and there. When I started digging yesterday I realized that the path is actually about 3 ft. wide and almost all the stones were covered over with grass. I removed all the grass and I like it a lot. I don't want the grass to come back. I thought I could dig out all the dirt around the stones and fill in with pea gravel and maybe a little sand on top of that. The stones are just laid in dirt. The area is shady so I can't grow herbs there and I'm going for a cleaner look anyway. Is this a good solution? I would upload a photo, but I don't know how to. I'd appreciate any ideas.
