Sugar Beet Seeds

This year I am wanting to grow sugar beets and process them into sugar but I am having difficulty finding heirloom beets that are specifically for sugar production.

I have tried johnnys selected seeds and southern exposure but when I look at their beets none of them specifically mention they are sugar beets though one or two do mention that they are sweet varieties.

If you could recommend me sugar beet varieties and where to buy them that would be very appreciated, thank you.

A lot of work. ;) 5 lbs. of beets = 3 teaspoons of sugar! But here is a link to a seed source. If you Google 'sugar beet seeds for sale' - that's what I did - you'll find 4 or 5 other sources.

This is not only in the Biotechnology companies. The Pharmaceutical companies do the same thing. They are required to release minimal research information (studies) to have their products released for public use. Look at Tylenol-it has been known by the producer of this produce from before it was released that it has very serious side-effects-one being live damage. It was buried from the public until recently; after many have suffered the effects caused by it. There needs to be changes in the law that require total public disclosure of every study (partial or complete) pertaining to said products before being approved. Enough time should be required before it release to allowing independent studies by disinterested qualified parties to check the validity of said studies. Too many political pockets are filled by these companies preventing the public's interests from being addressed in these matters. We need to vote these OLD FARTS out of office and require TV political ads to disclose the exact amounts from these corporation "donations" listing who gave who gets and how much. Then there should be a list by name the politician sponsoring PORK BARREL (that is how they steal from the tax payers to repay their corporate contributors) and how much and to whom is receiving it. Then vote these thieves out!

It's much easier to start lemongrass from cuttings. If you have an Asian grocery nearby just buy a couple stalks and stick them in a pot of soil or directly in the garden. I've never had one that hasn't rooted as long as it has even a small amont of the base still attached.

I know you're probably not really interested in making sugar, but there is a plant that is interesting to grow, closely related to sugar beets, called a mangel. It might be more fun to grow if you have some extra space. I don't, but if I did I would try a couple

What do the sugar companies do with the rest of the sugar beet? Seems like a huge waste.

Very little sugar is made from beets now days. They use cane instead. Commercial operations likely get a bit more sugar per pound with their equipment then one can at home but there are very few beet sugar plants left in operation. They sell much the left over mash as livestock feed, some goes into pet foods and some into people food as colorings and thickeners. Makes a good fermented compost soil amendment too. ;)

Flora, that site is very interesting. They sell alot of soil and stone that comes in with the beets....I never would have thought there would be enough of either to do much with. Guess I don't understand the huge amounts of beets being brought in....17% sugar according to them, also.

Our state, Michigan, has a large sugar beet industry. It produces almost a billion pounds of sugar each year. A quick calculation I did using some numbers from the company's site shows "our" beets yielding about 13% sugar. Sounds like that would be 1.3 pounds of sugar from 10 pounds of beets....processed under ideal conditions, not in my kitchen :)

I've made maple sugar starting with a tapped maple tree. Maybe it's time to experiment with beet sugar just for fun. I'll be asking a few questions next time I'm by the farm supply store.

About half the sugar produced in the U.S. is from sugar beets.
