Irises for Irises?

I have:

Bearded:

two different whites: one ruffled (Immortality) one cemetery iris as it's commonly called here both rebloom

Yellow (medium yellow, floppy foliage which makes me think it could be a cross between another species of iris)

Wabash - two tone purple

Fire Breather- full on orange

Altazar - historic purple

Japanese roof iris: blue

Two different purple medium dwarf iris: one is purple, the other is deep plum. They are always first to bloom in my garden!

LA:

Black Gamecock

Siberian:

Dwarf "baby sister"

Dwarf white (probably Alba).

Looking for: taller Siberians (especially tall white or yellow)

Bearded: bright yellow, lighter orange, scented types, 'reds' (as red as they can get)

do not need any more purple (gasp!!!).

Weird/wild bi-colors of the above

LA: yellows, oranges, anything close to a pink (but not purple or lavender please)

Other iris species

Warm climate re-bloomers would be very nice too (besides white)

I don't need things with names, I'm much more interested in colors.

I'm in the process of cleaning up an overgrown area in my yard where I had many named irises that I have dug out. They've been out there 15-16 yrs so I have since lost and forgotten all but one name ,American Classic. I have no place I want to plant them out so if you'd like them I'd be happy to send them to you for postage. Some rhizomes are a fair size,others are just nubbins and in need of TLC.I hate to just toss them if someone can use them.

Hi! I have a lovely all white TB (no id). Very delicate looking. I also have Snowbrook (TB) White with purple edging. And I have Mesmerizer (TB) White with orange beard. I also have a lovely very, very light pink, (TB) (no id). This one is also ruffly and delicate looking.

I would be interested in your White Cemetery Iris, Atlazar and Baby Sister.

I had read that they can still do OK in the same conditions as bearded iris, they just won't flourish as much..but I guess that isn't exactly true! Speaking of growing irises in shade, a couple years ago I divided and threw out some of this dwarf purple iris that I have, because it had a ton of leaf spot that I couldn't get rid of and it looked terrible. I tossed the worst plants under an evergreen near our house. The last 2 springs I have noticed that those plants have managed to root - with their rhizomes completely out of the ground - under the conifer branches. Their leaf spot has 100% disappeared, and they have bloomed happily each year. Weird! Who knew iris can survive in full shade, in a bunch of pine needles, with their rhizomes completely unburied! Silly plants.

Thanks Walter for the information. I may very well have to drive over there and see what all they have to offer. I don't know about you but I'm about ready for spring and summer to be here so we can enjoy our irises and other plants. I'm also a little excited about our Iris Show in April. Since this will be the first one I've ever attended much less one I'm going to try to have a couple of irises to show in. Thanks for all the help you have been in getting me a little more prepared for the show. Now I'm crossing my fingers that mother nature will be good to me and my irises. ground cover suggestions with irises

I've been trying a few things lately with my Hydrangea beds. 1) Ajuga, fills in nicely, not quite as invasive/aggresive as Ivy 2) Woodland Phlox, I love this combination, They're blooming now before the Hydrangeas fill in, they make a nice mat ofof blue blooms, and when it starts looking ratty the hydrangeas fill in. It's perrienial, adn dies back, which allows you to clean out the hydrangea beds during the fall/winter 3) May Apples, make a really nice thick mat of leaves held up over the mulch. Again, by the time they are spent and start looking ratty, the Hydrangeas fill in. 4) Pachasandra also seems to work nicely, it's more behaved than Ivey, but gives you the overall same effect. Like someone suggested above too infill plants that aren't necessary ground covers work well too. I've got some big spots of Autumn, Shield, Ostrich, painted ferms between the more open spots between hydrangeas. And you can't go wrong with Hosta. One thing I"m trying this year too is the groundcover hydrangea that Wilkerson Mills sells. Its supposed to stay very low, and allow you to underplant older more upright hydrangea bushes.

No mulching! You want the rhizomes to be exposed to the sun. That's why it is a hassle to weed around irises. Fertilize with Bulbtone or other bulb fertilizer early in the spring when iris begin to grow about 0.5 tsp or 1 tsp depending on the size of your plants.

Thanks Farmerpickle, there are some I like. I just didn't realize you had them anymore :) I can't make it to the Georgia plant trade though!
