Have: Potted Iris Rhizomes/Bulbs

This is an option for a specific want I have yet to be able to find. :-\ I hate to have to gamble on buying one for $20-$30 online and worry about it being shipped. I killed my dwarf banana during its Winter basement dormancy & am looking for another one. I will also consider other fruit plants (have enough berries for now). The Iris are mixed color heirlooms & are, as the post states, already in pots. Please LMK if you have any Dwarf Banana or other dwarf fruit/tropical edible plants available.

Wow, nice trade list, I want one of everything! lol. Anyway, how about some Naked Lilly bulbs, Star of Bethlehem Bulbs & some seeds for a few of my Iris? I would remove them from the pots (to cut down on shipping cost) & probably put in a ziploc baggie or something, or just leave in pots if you want that way, but wouldn't be able to send but like 1. Other way, I could send you 3-4. LMK.

flowerbrackob Molly Price, and others, have recommended division as soon as bloom is finished. This advice seems to have been lost. I have always waited a couple of months in the past and had little to none bloom the following year. I have friends in the area with better soil and they've had the same results. Excepting some very vigorous cultivars. After division a soaking is required. I mean thorough. Overnight if needed. Then no water until the top 6 inches of soil dries. Bearded rhizomes cannot be compared to other plants. I don't know why Melle's turned to mush after 10 days. Something was going on. I do know that hardiness is not an issue for tall beardeds in Sunset zone 14. No fresh manure, good drainage, full sun, deep irrigation - these are mandatory for good health.

I'd be careful about soaking, in my experience there is a period when a rhizome is very susceptible to rot just before it starts active growth. It may be a good idea to do a brief soak (10 minutes) in a mild bleach solution (1 part household liquid bleach to 10 parts water), which will kill some of the disease bacteria. Then pot them in 4" pots on sterile potting mix. Water sparingly until the first growth is evident. They can be planted out as soon as the roots have reached the bottom of the pot. This method is how I treat any 'challenged' rhizomes - for example starting a leafless mother from a potential bloom out. Thanks for the helpful responses. Iris gal, on the Spring-planted rhizomes - this spring I planted quite a few varieties. All but one or two of them bloomed. I think the flowers were smaller, and shorter, than if they were planted the previous fall, but that's a guess. If they bloom next year, I'll have a comparison. One variety, Flavescens, sent up several flowers, but almost died out, leaving only one small fan. The ones that bloomed were: Florentina, Sans Souci, Quaker Lady, Iris germanica, Pallida Dalmatica, Shah Jehan, and Flavescens. The one that didn't bloom was Shannopin, which is interesting because that one has the strongest growth now. Maybe because it didn't bloom. Oh I forgot, also Mme Chereau and Mrs. Horace Darwin also bloomed. Mrs. H. Darwin developed rot but I trimmed off the rotted part and it recovered completely. I guess that makes 9 that bloomed. Memory not working so well :-) Chadining, I didn't know that was an urban legend! Most of my readings have recommended keeping the rhizomes exposed! I have had a couple of rhizomes that rotted out, all from new plantings. I speculated they were infected at their origin, because none of my established varieties rotted. It might have been injuries during planting, leading to infection. But I have been trying to plant them all with the rhizome tops fully exposed to the sun. It will be a relief if I don't have to worry about that Sherryaustin, I have mine in raised beds. Originally, when constructing the raised beds, I stapled chicken wire in place so the bottoms were completely lined with chicken wire. Something tunneled through anyway, or climbed over the sides and then tunneled from there. My newer raised beds have 1/2" mesh hardware cloth. We'll see if that helps.

Iris borers are particular to irises. Here's more information about them. Adults (moths) emerge in September and October from the soil, mate, and deposit eggs on the dead leaves, particularly those that are dried and crinkled. Eggs usually are laid in crevices or rolled areas of the leaves, in groups of three to five or more. The egg overwinters and begins to develop in early spring. Eggs hatch during April and May and the young larvae begin to feed on young, rapidly growing iris leaves. After feeding on leaf surfaces, causing scars from which sap runs down the leaf, the larvae assume a boring habit, entering the leaves and gradually mining downward. Leaf mining injury is characterized by dark, water-soaked areas or slits in the leaves. Some chewing also occurs on leaf margins. When about half-grown (one-half to three-fourths inch long), iris borers reach the rhizomes, where they feed until late July or early August. As the borers feed, bacteria infect the rhizome, initiating the soft rot. When fully grown, iris borer larvae are about 2 inches long, cylindrical, smooth, and plump with whitish to pinkish bodies and dark brown heads. Shortly after this stage is reached the larva leaves the iris rhizome and constructs a "cell" in the soil where the pupa stage is passed. The pupa is a non-feeding transition stage between the larva (or worm) and the adult moth. Pupae are dark brown to black and are usually found in the top 2 inches of soil. After two to three weeks in the pupa stage, the iris borer moth emerges and the cycle is completed when the eggs are deposited. Moths are typical millers--dark grey to brown, with a wingspan of about 2 inches. There is only one generation per year. Prevention One key to iris borer prevention is removal and destruction of the previous year's dead foliage before April 1. ok that would be great. Please let me know what amounts to send to you. I would take as many of your iris that you can spare. I love them, hostas, coral bells, and columbine! :) So, Please let me know how many you can send and how many and what you what of the naked lily star af bethehem and seeds. The shipping way is fine i understand about not wanting to ship them in pots. Cutting them down is should be fine to. ANyway look forward to hearing from you soon. Thanks Le'Ann

leann: I can send you 3-4 large rhizomes that each probably have a few plant starts in them (probably half a foot long about with 3-4 plants coming out of them already & a few more nodes visible) in exchange for the items below. Please LMK if this is cool.

Just want to mention that you don't need to put iris rhizomes in a ziplock bag. It may make them sweat and rot. All you need to do is shake off all the dirt and put them in a paper bag or wrap in dry newspapers. They are tough and will be just fine until they can be planted.
