Mud / adobe floor for Patio

Hello,

My husband and I are exploring the idea of adobe/mud floor for our patio. I like the look (reminds of of my home country side), and it's Earth friendly/locavore etc.

This would be for my sunken patio. So I want to make sure that it does not create any drainage issues or wash away the floors.

Any advice? Would it be too wacky? Am I safe in having local landscape builders do it?

I read that 75% sand, and the remaining clay and straw.

Each to their own. Since it will be sunken I hope they plan on putting a drain in somewhere that actually collects water, some are clueless as to what purpose a drain serves, so you don't having standing water for any amount of time or else you will have clay soup.

Bullthistle,

It seems like you don't think this is practical? Yes, we will be taking care of the drain issue. But there is a chance that where the steps that leads to the sunken patio, there will be a lot of wash offs.

I know its wacky, but I cannot but hope that I can pull it off.

Robins are birds that I enjoy viewing, but not as they try to build nests under our porch lights which are on both sides of an area right by our front entrance door. For three days my husband has removed the straw, twigs, etc in order to prevent a completed robin's nest. They put the straw, twigs, etc. up, he takes them down immediately. Today after reading these posts, I sprayed the area with ant and roach spray that I use when the ants try to visit too close to our outside walkway. Two robins just came with straw in their mouths, but they flew away. I hope this is a long-term solution. This is the first time that we have had this problem in the nineteen years that we have lived here. I am already tired of the mess on our porch and the potential health hazard presented if the robins succeed in building a permanent nest. We have plenty of trees that the birds usually choose for their nests and are still quite welcome to do so. However, why our porch this year is a puzzle. Thanks to all who have posted for their solutions. To the haters, because one does not want a bird's nest in an area that he/she frequently uses in his/her home, does not label the person as an animal hater. Why should my quality of life be compromised daily upon trying to enter my home for the sake of a bird's nest? The answer is that it shouldn't and will not. We will win this fight and reclaim our safety and keep our good health.

Thank you all for your very insightful comments. Davidro �� We are reframing the entire area, so the pantry framing is completely up to us. Our approved plans do show a pantry but my GC says that as long as I figure it out by next week when we do the framing, we have some flexibility. The vent pipes and the electrical is the same.. all will depend on what we end up doing. Only limitation on electrical is that there will be no cans. Our ceiling is low and has wood planks and beams that we plan to keep. We are adding 2 new skylights (see the X near the clean-up sink and the cooktops). I am thinking something similar to this GW classic Spanish kitchen with school house flush mounts, pendants over sink s and a modest pendant over the banquette area The question of Pantry --> I added the pantry to the plan to see if we can reduce the cost of cabinetry and add some long-term grocery/ appliance storage. The original idea was to basically make this back to back cabinets. The galley kitchen would then end in a "L" here with the short leg facing the kitchen and another set of cabinets facing the corridor (for other household storage). The side facing the kitchen could have the fridge and the ovens (an appliance wall?). We gave up on that as the pantry seemed more optimal but the discussion now about choppy counters makes me rethink that. I love Dean1's neo-angle pantry as well (in fact pinged him a couple of times to ask to see the inside). The only thing on the oven is that I do want it to be ergonomically a good height for me. I am 5' tall and wanted the 27" gagg convection mounted lower and the 24" gagg combi mounted above so that I can peek into the combi at the eye-level. So it would be a deepish drawer with the ovens above and some storage above. Pllog --> I completely agree on the prep sink position. I am not happy. I thought about moving it after the cooktop area across the fridge. That may work as the filtered water will be at the prep sink but was concerned about people dropping clean-up things in the prep sink. That would be a big ��ick�� factor for me. The nice thing about this sink is that it has a built in cutting board that sits flush with the counter.. so the extending the countertop idea works. I actually did this based on feedback from you and Davidro in the appliance forum thread a while ago. Bmorepanic �� Thank you so much for the reality check on the pantry. I need to mock up the pantry layout physically per your email and see how it works.. I realized I am more visual/ kinesthetic than verbal as part of my remodeling education �� Here are the full house layout (sorry for the small size fonts.. Only way I could make it fit ). As you can see, the house kind of wraps around the patio/courtyard behind the kitchen with doors from the kitchen, family room and the master. Picture of the current kitchen with the ceiling plants and beam standing from where the pantry is shown in the plan.(pardon the crappy cellphone photo. There adobe brick wall you see at the end near the french door will be modified to add a window with a seat for the banquette. All that brick you see currently jutting into the aisle is gone. Very helpful thanks for taking the time to give your input! I really like the hearth all one level idea, and was planning on painting the brick fireplace wall. I have to look into the knee/wall and cap idea because I'm unfamiliar with such a thing but am open to that. If you meant the yellow curtains on the windows when you said "window treatments" they are already in the trash. I eventually need to get new Windows down there as the previous owner painted shut for many years. The thing in the corner is a gas heater that is much needed for that room due to it being below ground and an Add on to the house. Come to find out the previous owner ran the gas line from the laundry room outside and then back into the house from outside for that heater. So it will be a little tricky removing that. This room is unfortunetely lower on the list of Reno as I have my work cut out for me with sanding and restaining the upstairs, putting in hardwood on top of the asbestos tile in the living room and office, and then...The kitchen (face palm). But any little bit I can do at a time to the back room I will do as I need to get that closet out/reconfigured and that half brick wall before inviting friends over. That was the one thing in the house that made you say "wtf?" Thanks again!

you guys are all fantastic with valid points each. Moving walls, load bearing, HVAC, electrical etc. is a hefty job, fortunately husband is an elctrical and mechanical engineer that goes beyond application. Unfortunately, finding additional qualified help is also becoming an issue, I suppose that's why I was trying to find a way to not move big walls or do an addition. I keep seeing all this space.....anyway, we are not opposed to moving anything, it's not out of our realm. The foyer, first let me clarify the closest are recessed on the outside walls and we do not have a covered porch. I'm going to grab some pictures, the foyer in all feels huge, or perceptive wise due to catwalk/2 story. I almost felt we could steal space from here to use for other spaces. The closets are deep, but narrow, 17" wide by almost 3ft deep. I thought of doing a pull out pantry with a single door for the closets, due to their depth, with rods for hanging, and a shelf or two for shoes & boots. As for decorative benches/tables etc., I've had a hard time for placement because it is so open and no pony walls/dividers, etc. Currently it turns into a shoe free for all for everyone. We've discussed wall dividers, free standing closets, wine racks, blah blah blah, but again, we weren't sure the future of this space and wanted to hold off. At one point we even discussed making this our office space. I'm so appreciative of all - we have been working with already proposed ideas, you all have given us hope ! I have been taking the plans and trying my best to assimilate each, which is hard in an existing area, but I knew immediately I didn't want my back always turned. As for laundry, I've read a lot with pros and cons with it being ideal being near the mudroom area, keeping the mud from the house. I REALLY like Kristin's idea, especially given the master is right off the great room. I have a secondary entry to the basement through the garage, plumbed for another bathroom, would it be unwise to add a second laundry in the basement in addition to first floor laundry? just curious? I grew up with basement laundry, it's not awful, but not first choice if it's not necessary either (I keep thinking longevity-down the road). okay, sorry, and thank you again!! sending everything over to the husband now.

To be very direct: water is the number one enemy of adobe. If the patio is exposed to water, it will erode quickly, regardless of drainage.

See if you can find somebody local with some sort of experience with building adobe. Maybe somebody at a historic reconstruction? I know there are examples near Phoenix. It will probably be a DIY experiment, and may require more annual maintenance than you really want. But what do I know. We have rock to build patios out of, and if it doesn't work out, I just pull it up and relay it.

I agree with Kim. Adobe is an inappropriate material. What about Saltillo tile?

I guess I am hearing "sunken adobe " as an oxymoron. Not because I am expert in the matter, but because it is totally dependent on your achieving perfect drainage, controlling any other material runoff or drift, and drying out well before use--all typical patio issues, but seem magnified several fold with adobe as other building processes are a bit more forgiving. So how would you accumulate evidence and reassurance that that's likely to be accomplished? Otherwise what you will get is, it's pretty hard to make that work.

When building a wall it is not recommended to use adobe below grade as moisture will weaken the construction. It must be said that the formula for adobe is not fixed in cement and what you want may be closer to a brushed dirt floor. What I think I mean is that moisture may be something you want to encourage although it being sunken may not turn out well. Not a project to offer out.

I have a backyard full of adobe 12x12 pavers. They are all laid on a level sand surface. I would imagine that drainage would be an issue with any sunken patio. I live in Central California so we don't get lots of moisture, but your adobe pavers will not "wash" away. The adobe that was featured on the recent HGTV looks nothing like the authentic pavers that I have seen. Many homes in my area have them. They make for a very informal feel. I am curious as to where you can get adobe pavers? The last adobe plant that I know about on the west coast went out of business a few years ago.

This is a totally doable project.
I've seen many outdoor adobe floors in the various countries that I have traveled to.
I would suggest that you use a binder in your clay mix just like many of the ancient civilizations did.
Several landscape companies offer different types of organic binders.
Some binders are extracted from pine trees and others from agave plants.
You can buy the binder in sack form or already mixed into your adobe/ clay/ sand/ decomposed granite mix.

Several companies sell a premix called " TerraPave".

It wears extremely well. Several large commercial parking lots ( such as HP in Silicon Valley along with a few other green building projects ) have used this
product .

I'm using it, TerraPave, on a residential project in Sonoma county and getting it provided by Wheeler Zameroni Supply in Santa Rosa.
