This business of radish plants being self-incompatible, in that flowers from one plant can't be fertilized by flowers from the same plant, was bothering me. If I have a seed packet of these things, and the seeds all came from one plant, how would your crop ever fertilize? I was talking to a botanist, and got some interesting answers. First of all, the seed provider ALWAYS gets their seeds from MANY PLANTS, and is careful to mix those seeds before packaging. Also, self-compatablility is a bred-in characteristic. Many native plants, including native vegetable plants, are self-incompatible. Self-incompatability is genetically advantageous. All human cultures have strong intolerance of incest for exactly this reason. But you'd really rather not have plants that can't self-fertilize. So that characteristic is bred out. It can be done. For plants like radishes that are only rarely asked to bear fruit, no one has ever bothered to do that.

I'm sorry I misunderstood, I guess I can't help you with that. Although I can and pickle a lot, I've never pickled any kind of seed pod, at least not that I'm aware of. So they probably wouldn't be good in kim chi? I had to go search for a photo of "rat tail radishes". They look just like the big black radishes I planted last year and let go to seed, and the pods tasted like radishes only milder. Here I thought I'd come up with something new. Good luck. Have you ever grown or ever even heard of a rat-tailed radish? Well I was gifted a package of seed and every year I like to grow something new and different in the garden. People I was not prepared for this! These radishes get a long skinny seed pod like a rat tail that you eat instead of the root bulb. These photos show 3 plants. The tallest is 5 ft tall and 4 ft wide. They send out these long arms with purple flowers on the end and spiky looking things all the way up that are turning into rat tails! I sure hope they are delicious. I don't normally even like radishes that well... I may be trying to rehome about 100 rat-tailed radishes.
