I am afraid I'm as guilty as anyone here when it comes to having some plants die on me. There has been a lot going on in my life recently and unfortunately many of my plants have suffered. I lost one of my favorite streptocarpuses and also one of my chimeral African violets that I've had for many years. I have a saying that many plants have given their lives for my education. When I started out growing plants I killed most of them out of ignorance. Unfortunately now when I kill a plant it's usually more out of neglect, which is more of an embarrassment. :o( Fortunately my African violets and gesneriads are pretty tough plants and take quite a bit of abuse before they succumb. Life looks like it is going to be a lot less eventful and return somewhat back to normal. I know, famous last words. lol But hopefully my plants will soon reap the benefits. Larry PS - Yes, Cena does know where I live. She was nice enough to go out of her way to visit my wife and me one afternoon when she was in the area. We then showed her around our house that we affectionately refer to as the North Denver Conservatory. It is a great house for plants with its wonderful windows. Cena was quite gracious with her complements. I love you too Cena.

Here, they drop so many seeds it's unbelievable...I've joked on my trade list that I have enough to stuff a beanbag chair if you wanted, but really, it's no joke! After the flower is done, there'll be a green pod which eventually will turn brown and split open. Sometimes the pod opens up almost in a tulip shape. Each pod has like 20-30 morning glory-sized brown seeds inside. They germinate wherever they land and look like wide blades of grass when they sprout. If anybody wants any, feel free to contact me! Yeah, I suppose there's no accounting for how folks choose to waste time on their hobbies. :) Guess I'm just one of those nostalgic types who will choose sentimental value over practicality. For example, I'll start a tree by rooting a cutting if it came from the house I grew up in. I once sprouted cherry seedlings from fruit eaten in a work meeting, and gifted my team with some of the plants potted into decorative containers. In the case of the iris seedlings, the seeds were collected (with permission) while on a walk with a friend. Of course it's easier to start plants from free divisions or to buy from a nursery, but there's something to be said about doing something difficult just to see if you can, and then passing on a meaningful gift of your labors to loved ones. Thanks to everyone who posted their advice and knowledge on this thread. The little plants seem to be doing well at this time (new growth!)and I think they're gonna be just fine.

Laurie, that is very informative. I am glad it is different because I already have some LA irises growing in my goldfish pond and I really wanted something a little different. The original plant was beside a rose garden and was very tall and magestic looking. I have the tiny babies planted around a angel water fountain. When I was a child, I loved bearded irises, but I can't grow them in zone 9 NE Florida. We are planning to move back to zone 8 where I have noticed others growing bearded irises. I can't wait. Thanks again. I know my way around many plants, but the irises, for the most part are new to me. However, I did buy a huge bucket of white with violet centered African Irises today. I have them planted in front of some red rose bushes.
