CAD Software

Does anyone know about sedign software. I am upgrading from a program that I got at a Office supply store to a program that has more options. What is everyone out there using and how is it working for you. Thanks for any input. I need all the info I can get to make an informed decision before I spend all my money.

Prolandscape seems to be the most popular with design/build landscapers followed by Dynascape. These are not cheap. They run over $1k. I believe Prolandscape has bot photoimaging and 2d/3d drawing software. Dynascape is a plan drawing software with lots of built in settings that make the plans look less mechanical (you can do this type of thing with other cad software with experience).

I use Autocad, but it is not a landscape program, has a huge learning curve, and is only necessary if you share files with engineers, architects, and surveyors.

Not trying to belabor the obvious, but there is a world of difference in the services, expenses and legal liabilities between "a consult on the build...with a one page build recommendation", and a legally required and stamped structural engineering design, details and accompanying load calculations necessary for building permit. And then there's the requiredconstruction field inspections that are required to assure the builder is correctly following the structural design and specifications. You get exactly what you pay for, assuming your local jurisdiction allows you to do whatever you want. If you have to follow the regulations of the jurisdiction, you will pay for the services required by them. The posts on this thread reflect a whole series of completely different scenarios, which are not comparble to one another. Buyer beware! Better still, buyer check with your local building official to see what your jurisdiction requires so you know exactly what you have to do. You won't get that authoratative information here because no one knows what's mandatory in your area.

that's one of my original drawings. and it was very (non)professionally produced by using quark xpress. why would i use a desktop publishing app to design cabinets, you ask? because i worked in publishing for sixteen years and i feel most comfortable working in that program. do you like the "hooks" i have positioned in the cubbies? yeah, those are capital Js! so, the quick answer is do the best you can with what you've got! and somehow, it works. GL!

+1 SketchUp. It's far and away the most user-friendly you'll find. For a few hundred bucks you can do an IntelliCAD (AutoCAD clone) package but I guarantee the 3D's not as intuitive as SketchUp.
