Self-watering Containers... Earthbox, etc ??

Hi all,

I've been looking at several of the DIY earthbox type containers for ideas and note the plastic covering used in all of them. It's my understanding that this is to prevent the fertilizer strip from becoming wet and leaching too much out into the mix... is this correct?

Is there another purpose for the plastic cover?

Has anyone tried slow-release fertilizer, such as osmacote instead of the fertilizer strip? I'm thinking of shredded pine bark and Turface MVP (3:2) for the mix.

Would it work to use the slow-release in the mix and replace the plastic sheet with pinestraw mulch?

I need to pot up some newly rooted figs soon and am trying to decide how I want to do it to reduce my watering requirements. I'm afraid the plastic covering might promote fungal problems.

Would it be better to use conventional containers and wicks to a water reservoir for bottom watering? That might be easier to flush by top-watering occasionally unless the plastic covering is replaced by some sort of mulch.

Thanks for any input!
