how does different soil mix initially affect the plant?

Hello.

I repotted a number of 5-7 year old maples: when I got them they were in loam based soils, and I initially planted them in a similar type soil. I have now changed to a completely different pine bark based mix that seems more appropriate to ensure good aeration/drainage. My question is this: does a tree/plant need a period of adjustment if one moves to a totally different soil? If so, how does it affect the tree? what would be visible signs?

I ask because I am not yet entirely happy with the leaves, in the sense that they seem a little more stressed (slight leaf burn, slightly 'depressed' colors, etc): it could be the amount of sun (more this year), or the temps (high, then again cold), or the new soil.

Thanks for any input.

(I eliminated as much as possible the old soil from the rootball, so this won't be an issue, and the trees are healthy. I added very little initial organic fertilizer.)
