Help, I'm a complete newbie

I really have no idea what I'm doing, but I'm hoping that you guys can give me some tips, or point me in the right direction!

I live in Southern California (Orange County to be specific). I have a couple of brick planter boxes that I would like to use to plant some vegetables. I know nothing about gardening, but I'm game :) My husband I spent the weekend digging out the roots from the old shrubs that used to be there, and now the planter boxes are nice and clean with just dirt.

My questions:

1) Which of the following crops are suitable for where I live, and when do you start planting them?

tomatoes

onions

broccoli

potatoes

green peppers

strawberries (not a vegetable, I know)

2) What other preparation do I need to do for the soil? It seems to be very rich soil, nice and dark. Not that I know anything about this, but no sand or clay.

3) What other basics do I need to know? I've helped weed and water in my sister's garden years ago, but that's about it. Do you need to use pesticides? Help! :)
