Formulas for buying flagstone

I am interested in any formulas you have for estimating the amount of flagstone needed for a project.

I am planning a "stepping stone" pathway that will have mulch between the stones. Local supplier seem to provide two options. 1.5" thick, random stone, which seem to be designed for a patio or a more solid path where the pieces are fitted together. Second choice is "oversize" pieces that are 2-4" think and come in larger pieces - more stepping stone size.

The suppliers have some suggested values to convert ton to surface area, but they can't tell me how this relates to spacing between stones, and if it accounts for wasteage.

Is there a formula to convert tons to area for the following designs:

- a more solid design with 2" spaces between pieces. what about 4" spacing?

- using larger pieces that are placed one after the other in a more or less linear fashion.

I'm thinking the "oversize", higher priced stone might actually be cheaper since less actual ground is covered?
