Where do you say enough?

We finished building our house in summer of '05. We live in NE Ohio, suburbs of cleveland, our lot is 100x150. We love our house and all we've done to it but we've put alot into it. With regards to the landscape, we had to start from scratch - I had no idea what we'd be in for.

We should've known it would be tough when our builder had to bring in 10 trucks of dirt to make the grade manageable. We were so lucky to find a landscaper we love. He really helped save us $$. When all is said and done here's what we've done:

Lawn - entirely from seed

Front yard 3 beds - boxwood, pyramidal hollies, 2 cherry trees, linden tree, summersweet and various perennials. We still need a lot of ground cover - that's later this year. Tore out builder sidewalk to front door - was way to narrow made too small of a bed for foundation plantings - repoured center sidewalk, large landing off driveway and large entry landing.

Side yards - beds, mulch, perennials

Back yard - additional 7 trucks of soil, compost, 450 sq.ft. concrete base, paver patio and retaining wall; Ipe landing and stairs; enormous back bed (150' wide by 30' deep - which my husband turned entirely by hand with shovel last Spring and worked in compost - way too costly to do topsoil); planted 4 Eastern White Pine; 5 Sugartime crabapples, 1 black hills spruce, 1 Jap. maple, 1 Celebration Maple, 4 riverbirch. Numerous shrubs, perennials, and bulbs.

When all is said and done we've spent about $35,000 on landscaping - approx. 10% of the cost of our house. Did we do too much? We are planning to stay here for 15 years, we'll be 55 by then - maybe another 5 after that. Just curious what others have done.
