Is there really a cool cayenne ?

I listen to a lot of talk radio esp interested in health topics

One guy mentioned "cool cayenne" available in capsule or pill form, I rather supply my own.

Is there such a cayenne available???? I would like to grow it ????? Is it heirloom ??? Does it really have anti inflammatory properties like the regular cayenne supposedly does???

I have regular cayenne drying now, Not a big fan on hot stuff. Plus dont have much gardening space. period.

I plan on planting a "victory garden" Out front our side yard> Neighbors wont like but too bad. Heck with a useless lawn. They probably hate my water barrels, woodburning, piles of stacked neatly found, thanks to past winds and icestorms, firewood, and other Sandford and Son look now. But gotta do what I can to live thrifty.

By cool do you mean not hot, as in lacking in capsiacin (or however that is spelled), the essential oil that makes hot peppers hot?

If so, yes, there is a variety called Sweet Cayenne that is not hot at all. I grew it last year, and was very pleased with it. Only trouble I had with it was the bunnies like to nibble the tips of the peppers off. I've seen it offered in several of the catalogs -- believe I got it from Totally Tomatos.

It is called 'cool cayenne' only because it is processed and in capsule form so it won't irritate your digestive tract. The cayennes used are still hot peppers, as the 'healthy part' is the capsaicin(what makes the peppers hot). If you want peppers without so much heat for eating, visit the hot pepper forum and read through(or do a search for)the threads about milder chiles. There is a very wide variety. If you want peppers for health reasons, you could try growing mild to medium hot peppers and get your digestive tract used to them a little at a time, working up to cayennes. But all peppers are good for you(IMO). Hope this helps.

I've used the C&S Hot Pepper Suet and the squirrels left it alone. I've also used a pepper (capsaicin) spray on wisteria and rhododendron buds with some success. The squirrels decimate one particular rhododendron (Percy Wiseman) in late winter. Unfortunately they take a bite and don't like it. Then a day or so later one of them takes a bite and doesn't like it. After a while there are no bites left. Next winter I'm constructing a rhododendron cage. Claire

I'm glad you mentioned where you had it planted because I have a short strip inside the gate, on that north side where mine would be happy too. I have left it in lots of sun two seasons now. It has grown very nicely but I would like to see more of your colour rather than the gold tones it maintained in the sunshine. (I just wanted a jump start on growth...and to experiment with colour.)

It could also be Salvia lyrata. the leaves aren't quite right but I have seen S. lyrata to vary drastically even within the same population. I have seen it veined with purple and totally green. I have also seen these flowers do a non flowering flower where they go from bud to seed capsule without the petal formation due to weather ; maybe not enough rain or too much shade. Then the next year they are back to blooming nicely. I will take some pictures tomorrow. It is definitely a salvia. Mine are mostly past flower.
