Indoor Hanging Plant Suggestions Please?

For the longest time we had Spider Plants, and every year when Summer came, they shrank back into pitiful little yellow leaves that needed saving. So now somehow my parents have split my two leggy begonias into three plants and they are also hanging pitifully at the windows.

I've tried doing a couple of searches online, but most suggestions came to foliage that could only tolerate indirect bright light. Does anyone have any suggestions for three large windows that get full sun? We can't have anything that tends to shed or needs watering too often either.

I also have full sun windows and it is difficult to find any plants that will tolerate this. Try some of the small sedums that will droop over the edge of the pot. And make sure you put the polysorb type crystals in the pot so it doesn't get water stress. Most "indirect " plants will last if you move them back 6-10' away from the window. Good luck!

After looking everywhere for the floor to ceiling tension pole plant hangers of the 60's/70's, I finally called Vermont country store catalog and put in a request. They are known for carrying hard to find items and the person I spoke with remembered them. She took down my name, etc and all of the details of the plant poles. She said she couldn't promise anything but it sounded like the type of thing they'd like to find especially when I told her how many people are looking for them to no avail. She also said it could take 6mos to a year or two once they get a request and research it. At least there's hope! Michele

That clay pot looks like it has mineral buildup on its surface. When you water your plant, do you only use a small amount of water? If so, this could be the problem. If you don't flush enough water thru the soil to where it runs out of the bottom, then the minerals dissolved in the water begin to buildup in the soil and cause problems for your plant's roots. Before growing another plant there, I would use fresh soil and a different pot. Perhaps a glazed pot? (One that's glazed on both the inside and outside.) This would prevent the pot from absorbing these mineral deposits. But you would still have to flush plenty of water thru the soil, so these minerals don't begin to buildup in the soil all over again. Or you'll be back where you started.

Sorry to say but I think that remaining lucky Bamboo plant is a goner, believe it too far gone to recover (from its color). As a succulent collector I'd caution that succulents MORE than most other plants would require small plastic pots w/ drainage holes & would absolutely not survive that pot w/out it. Am a fan of blue & white work as well, had a well-loved Ming Aralia in blue & white cache pot for several years, really nice. So I understand the attraction to the pots; agree abt using them as cache pots. I think it could be nice & doable.

Thanks for all your help! #1 does look like a Dischidia nummularia when I googled a pic, and #2 is definitely a Hoya Linearis! They are both growing very well and look great in my flat. I own a flower shop in London and ordered them a selection of mixed hanging plants through my supplier in holland, loved them so much I took them home. Have orderd some more for the shop now as the supplier thought the second was a type of senecio, thanks to you guys I put him straight

I face northeast, so my plants don't get direct sun, but I have had good experience with my croton and my palm. If all else fails, try putting up some sort of screen. Or leave the blinds down but open. Something to shield the plants from the scorching summer sun.

Just about the only plants that can handle direct light are the cacti and other succulents. In fact, they love it. My suggestions are:

1) Rather than using hanging plants us a tall plant stand and stock it with cacti and other suculents. That can look very impressive, but be careful, they are addictive. Plus you don't need to worry about them when you go away!

2) Get a sheer curtain, then any of the "bright indirect light" plants with thrive there. Prayer plants and your spider plant will do very well.

3) Move the hanger hooks back a few feet

4) Try some big holiday cacti (christmas/thanksgiving/easter cactus) in your hangers, they can take a lot of sun and look great hanging

when i had a bright 4th floor south sunny window, i had a "goldfish" plant right in the window. i'm sorry i don't remember the scientific name, but it had small shiny green leaves and nice abundant orange flowers. it was relatively large and it never burned for me, and i only wish my windows were as sunny now because it was a great plant!!
